Guy-Double Target, 19?? Directed by Yorihisa Uchida.

This tape contains two episodes of the direct to video Guy series. If your knowledge of Japanese animation is limited to Speed Racer and Battle of the Planets, you're in for a shock. You don't see this kind of sex and violence on The Ren and Stimpy Show. It should be pointed out, though, that the sex scenes have been edited and are considerably tamer than the version available on Japanese laser disc.

Guy is... well, he's this guy. He's a spacefaring thief and soldier of fortune. In the first episode, "Awakening of the Devil," Guy, along with his spunky female sidekick Raina, searches an abandoned space ship for salvage. Instead the pair find a beastie with huge teeth and slimy tentacles, kind of a cross between John Carpenter's Thing and James Cameron's Alien queen. The creature was once human, and Guy and Raina travel to the planet below to learn how this man could become so horribly mutated.

The search leads them to an interstellar prison on the planet Geo. The planet is alive, and every now and then it mutates one of the inmates. Someone manages to piss off the planet and it begins turning people into monsters left and right. Guy is among those infected, and he transforms into a huge armor plated thingie.

While the first episode is quite good, the second leaps into the series formula all too quickly. Guy and Raina attempt to steal the golden goddess from Arcana and Noima, the spiritual leaders of their planet. As in the first episode, there are monsters, graphic violence, sex scenes, and when all seems lost Guy transforms into his big blue alter ego and proceeds to kick some butt. This built in deus ex machina gets old pretty fast, just as it did when The Incredible Hulk TV series used the same device.

Worth watching for the first episode.
