SOUNDTRACK REVIEW
CON AIR
Composed by Mark Mancina/Trevor Rabin
Mancina's latest effort's not quite as memorable as his previous action
score for the movie "Speed", but production here definately sounds slicker,
which is something I enjoy with action scores.
Lacks a good hummable theme like "Speed", but makes up for it by having
fairly good rythm programming. Often, many rythms and noises bubbling
under normal decibel level would burst into a loud (sometimes obnoxious)
electric guitar passage. Yes, this score incorporates the heavy use of
the electric guitar, whether you like it or not.
This is probably a conscious effort to underscore the somewhat corny
movie with somewhat cheesy and obnoxious music.
Speaking of which, this scores sounds "Top Gun-ish" and somewhat
"Days of Thunder"-inspired. Its initial use of the low distorted guitar
grinding noise in its rythm does remind me of Hans Zimmer's "The Fan",
in which Zimmer made use of a similar rythm and sound sample.
Which is all to say this score isn't the most original thing you'd ever
find, but it is occasionally still enjoyable, if action scores ala
Zimmer/Mancina style is your thing.
Just try to bear with the overuse of the electic guitars though!
