The Portrait of a Lady (Gramercy - 1996)

synopsis
(drama) Academy Award winner, Jane Campion (The Piano), brings to the screen the story of a young woman who challenges the confines of her sheltered would-be destiny.

Set against the grand European background of the late 19th century, with old-world sensibilities and layered with contemporary resonance, the boldy independent heroine, Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman) rejects a marriage proposal in favour of her hunger to experience the world.

After inheriting a small fortune, Isabel finds that money doesn't bring her the freedom she so desires. Her headstrong innocence proves no match against the evil manipulations of a duplicitous friend, Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey), who leads Isabel into an unfortunate marriage to the devious, Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich). Isabel suffers horribly but after she realises the dark truth of Madame Merle and Osmond's deception, she awakens to a curious freedom.

Christian as Edward Rosier

Edward Rosier is Pansy Osmond's rich young suitor. Pansy Osmond (Valentina Cervi) is Gilbert Osmond's (John Malkovich) obedient and submissive daughter. Cervi is a promising young Italian actress. 20 years old, Cervi was born in Rome and is the granddaughter of the popular Italian actor, Gino Cervi.

""He's a twit - he's ridiculous," says Bale of Rosier. "But suddenly, he's got this passion and he sort of enjoys it. He's been a bit of a fop all his life, making sure he wears the right clothes and is very in fashion. He collects little antiques and bibelots and things. He suddenly finds himself in love, and he doesn't care about those things anymore. And the girl's father (Malkovich), bans him from seeing her so in all my scenes, I'm sort of huffing and puffing and pulling a strop."
