Single On-Camera Strobe vs. Key/Fill Lighting
Photos © Gary M. Pinkston 1998, 1999
Two nearly identical photographs. The one on the left was taken with a single on-camera strobe. The one on the right was made using an off-camera strobe set to the subjects right as the key with the on-camera strobe, set one stop down, providing the fill. Exposure was made at the key EV.
Variations of the technique include setting either a one or two EV difference between the strobes and exposing at either the key EV for a "Low Key" effect or at the fill EV for a "High Key" effect. If using a two EV spread you can chose the third alternative of exposing halfway between the strobe settings to get a neutral effect.
I find the difference in quality between the two methods quite dramatic. Since stumbling across this two-strobe technique I have employed it at every opportunity and always with excellent results.
