Sometimes you want less Depth-of-Field, not more. See the way Nikki practically jumps off the screen in this picture, as if shot in 3D? It is the photo's shallow DoF that causes her image to stand out so prominently in front of the deeply out of focus background. Isolating her so completely from the background was accomplished by photographing her with a longer than normal lens (80mm) and employing a combinatoin of slow film speed (ASA 100) and high shutter speed (500) which allowed the use of a large aperture (f-4).
