If you know your picture is going to run 4x6 you can shoot wider and employ more compositional elements. Including golf pro Hale Irwin in this shot with Michael Jordan tells much more of the story of Michael playing in a celebrity golf tournament than would a shot of Michael by himself.
But if you know your picture is only going to run 2x2 you have to tighten up on your subject and include fewer compositional elements. A bit of advice; regardless of how great you think your concept is, always end your photo session with one good close-up--just in case.
