Arthur Honegger:
Judith (1925-1926)

After the successful debut of Roi David (1921), Honegger was again tempted to the scenic treatment of a biblical history. Using a text of René Morax, and a much more mature and elaborate style that in his previous scenic cantata, the debut of Judith on June the 13th of 1925 was not all the successful that his composer might have wished. Honegger reviewed the work on the following year and converts it into a concert work with the subtitle of "Musical Drama", withdrawing spoken parts and adding new numbers, premiering it in Rotterdam; it will not be the last review of the score, upon lengthening it yet the same year, inaugurating it with success as a "Serious Opera" on February the 13th of 1926.
