Arnold Schönberg:
Pierrot Lunaire, op.21 (1912)

In January 1912, actress Albertine Zehme comissioned Schönberg with the composition of a melodrama cycle, with piano accompaniment, over poems from Albert Giraud translated to the german. The initial lack of enthusiasm, by the composer's part, was transforming on real interest when he decided to experiment with the voice and the harmony of the pieces, as well to increase the number of participant instruments. Premiered, with success, in October of the same year in Berlin, Schönberg creates to that end a system of singing-narration, which he called Sprechgesang; a phantasmagoric and aeric score, it began to consolidate the future tonal base over which his author will move on the future.
