The Bajorans ask to join the Federation after the Cardassians withdraw, ending over half a century of occupation. To begin the admittance procedure, the Federation sends a group of Star Fleet personnel to take over the administration of the abandoned Cardassian station.

Commander Benjamin Sisko and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax, both of station Deep Space Nine, discover the stable wormhole to the Gamma quadrant while looking for the Bajoran Celestrial Temple.

The crew of Deep Space Nine begin to hear about the Dominion, the main power in the section of the Gamma quadrant that the wormhole opens to.

Near the end of the year, StarFleet makes contact with the Dominion when Commander Sisko and a Ferengi merchant are captured by the Jem'Hadar, which is the military muscle of the Dominion.

The USS Odessey, a Galaxy-class starship, goes into the Gamma quadrant to rescue Sisko and the Ferengi. However, the ship is destroyed by the Jem'Hadar.

Commander Sisko successfully returns to the Alpha quadrant. StarFleet immediately starts taking steps to get ready for a Dominion invasion.

The USS Defiant, a ship originally designed to fight the Borg but later mothballed, is permanently stationed at Deep Space Nine and is placed under Sisko's direct command.

Sisko takes the Defiant into the Gamma quadrant in an attempt to find the Founders of the Dominion and strike a peace deal with them. However, the Jem'Hadar attack the Defiant and capture the crew, except for Kira Nerys, a major in the Bajoran militia, and Deep Space Nine's Chief Security Officer Odo. The captured crew are put through tests to see what their reactions would be if the Dominion and the Federation signed a peace treaty that would give Bajor to the Dominion.

Odo, Deep Space Nine's Chief of Security, discovers that he is a member of the Founder's race. His people ask him to stay with them, but he opts to stay with the Bajorans instead.

The Founders begin a campaign to try to get Odo to rejoin them in the Great Link.

A joint fleet of ships from the Cardassian Obsidian Order and the Romulan Tal Shiar go into the Gamma quadrant to destroy the Founders homeworld. The campaign turns into a trick by the Founders t eliminate the Cardassians and the Romulans as a threat.

The Dominion attempts to start a war between the Federation and the Tzenkethi to further destabilize the Alpha quadrant, but are unsuccessful.

Odo kills another Founder in a battle on board the USS Defiant. This is the first time that one Founder has killed another.

The Klingon Empire invades the Cardassian Union, fearing that the Dominion engineered a civilian uprising and coup. When the Federation condemned the invasion, Gowron responded by withdrawing from the Khitomer Accords.

The Jem'Hadar continue to attack ships from the Alpha quadrant.

An elaborate scheme of tampering with the Bajoran wormhole, bombing a conference with the Romulans, and sabotaging Earth's power grid is set in motion by StarFleet Admiral Leyton. He wanted people to believe that a Dominion invasion was imminent so that he could sieze power.

When a group of rebel Jem'Hadar soldiers find an Iconian gateway, the Federation and the Dominion must team up to stop them. This is the first and so far only act of cooperation between the two powers.

Odo contracted a mysterious disease and returned to his homeworld. Once there, Odo is put on trial for his murder of another Founder. His punishment was that he was turned into a humanoid.

The Cardassian, Garak, while on the USS Defiant, attempted to destroy the Founders' world and start a full-scale war with the Dominion.

The Dominion is successful in starting a war between the Klingon empire and the Federation, which are the last two races in the Alpha quadrant that are powerful enough to pose a threat to them. When a covert team of Starfleet personnel are able to prove to Gowron that the war was being influenced by the Dominion, a cease-fire is declared and the Khitomer Accords re-instated.

The Federation captures a downed Jem'Hadar ship as a war trophy.

When the Federation offers full membership to Bajor, Captain Sisko opposes it, saying that it was too soon and warning of dire consequences. The Bajorans take Sisko's advice and choose not to join at that time.

Federation communications relays in the Gamma quadrant are destroyed after reports come in of a massive Jem'Hadar invasion fleet hiding near the wormhole.

Gul Dukat announces that the Cardassian Union had joined the Dominion under his leadership. This gives the Dominion its first foothold in the Alpha quadrant. With Jem'Hadar ships, the Cardassians are able to virtually wipe out the Maquis and gain lost territory.

The Dominion arrive at Deep Space Nine to negotiate with Kai Winn, hoping to sign a treaty of non-aggression with Bajor.

The Miradorn, Tholians, and Romulans sign a Treaty of Non-aggression with the Dominion.

The Federation mines the mouth of the wormhole to prevent any more Jem'Hadar ships from entering the Alpha quadrant. The Dominion became enraged, and gave the Federation an ultimatum to remove the mindefield, or they'll capture the station to do it themselves. The Federation refuses.

Bajor signs a treaty of non-aggression with the Dominion, and all Bajorans leave the station. Bajor officially protests the Federation's refusal to vacate Deep Space Nine.

The Dominion starts a war with the Federation and the Klingons.

The Federation captures a Vorta and holds him as a prisoner of war.

Dukat goes insane after losing his family and his war, and is arrested by the Federation when they recapture Deep Space Nine. Damar becomes the puppet ruler of the Cardassian Union under Dominion rule.

Star Fleet is advised to surrender by a group of genetically engineered humans who calculated that the war would cost billions of lives.

A group of Ferengi mercenaries manage to capture another Vorta, who they turn over to the Federation.

Dukat escapes from Federation custody as he is being transported back to Earth to await the end of the war, when he can be tried as a war criminal.

The Dominion began making Alpha Jem'Hadar, which are specifically tailored to fighting in the Alpha Quadrant. The Alphas believe that they are superior to the Gamma Jem'Hadar.

The Orion Syndicate began to work with the Dominion. The Orion Syndicate attacked a Klingon Embassy in a plan to further undermine the Federation/Klingon coalition against the Dominion.

The Dominion, going on the offensive again, manage to conquer Betazed.

The Federation manages to convince the Romulans that the Dominion is planning on attacking them, causing the Romulans to abandon their non-aggression treaty with the Dominion and ally themselves with the Klingons and the Federation.

The Federation-Klingon-Romulan alliance is finally able to go on the offensive again, instead of waging a defensive war, with an assault and victory at the Chintoka system.
