ABOUT THE SHOW:
"Bob and Maragert" is a cartoon on Comedy Central about Bob and Margaret
Fish, a working professional , childless, middle class couple from
London. Bob is a dentist with a private practice. In a bit of wry
humor, we see in the opening credits that his surgery (office) is
directly above a sweet shop. Margaret is a chiropodist. In place of
children, they have two less-than-intelligent and quite lazy dogs.
"Bob and Margaret" is a co-production of Comedy Partners (a.k.a., Comedy
Central's production arm) in the U.S., Nelvana Productions (of Canada),
Global -- a Canwest Company (of Canada), and Channel 4 TV (of Britain).
It was created by Alison Snowden and David Fine. It is based on the
film "Bob's Birthday." The music and theme are by Patrick Godfrey.

*** SEASON 1 (1998 only) 13(?) EPISODES ***
107. "A Tale of Two Dentists" 22 Jun 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine
Bob's practice is booming. Then, a new dentist, Dr. Stanway, opens up
across the street. While he is very personable -- moreso than dry Bob --
he also has cut rate prices, and Bob notices a decline in the number of
patients. His receptionist even goes to work the new doctor. When
Margaret chips a tooth, and Bob cannot fit her in quickly enough for her
satisfaction, Margaret becomes a turncoat and visits the new guy. Bob's
increasing depression clears when the new doctor is arrested -- he turns
out to be a wanted criminal who has set up his practice for the purpose
of molesting his patients.
103. "A Night In" 29 Jun 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine
Bob and Margaret decide that simply watching TV at home is dulling them,
but Margaret remembers the time they went out to see a comic and became
the butt of his jokes. Therefore, they decide to rent a video. They
have trouble choosing one, though both are intrigued by the pornographic
ones. They finally choose the five-years-old romance film "Trials of
Time." Neither Bob nor Margaret can find their membership cards, so Bob
reapplies, giving blood and urine samples along with filling out a long,
complicated form. They settle in for an evening with pizza and the video
when their friends Henry and Judy ring on the phone to join them for
spaghetti. Henry and Judy have a newborn terror of a son, who dampens
any enthusiasm Bob and Margaret had for having their own children, a
topic of discussion earlier in the episode.
102. "Blood Sweat & Tears" 6 Jul 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: Alison Snowden
Bob visits the doctor and gets the bad news: while his teeth are in great
shape, the rest of him is not. Meanwhile Margaret throws her back out,
again, this time by bending over to get food for the dogs. After the
chiropractor visits and straightens Margaret, the couple decides to get
in shape. After Bob has a run-in with a walking machine, and Margaret is
defeated by aerobics, they decide to take up something easier to begin
with: badminton. They schedule a friendly game with another couple:
shrewish Cathy and her new boyfriend, Ken. During the game, in which
Cathy continually berates Ken, she knocks him out with her racquet.
While recovering in the hospital, Ken overhears Bob and Margaret talk
about what a wimp he is, so Ken becomes more assertive.
101. "Bob's Burglary" 13 Jul 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: Alison Snowden and David Fine
Bob and Margaret are robbed of all their possessions while they sleep.
This includes their steaks for the next day. While making a list of
missing possessions, they add a few they would have liked to have; the
insurance agents buy off on the whole list, and they get everything.
The robbers sell the nicked items at a swap meet -- including one to
the police officers who answered the initial burglarly call. After
Bob and Margaret buy new things, Bob throws the boxes away outside the
apartment, and the same thieves prepare to rob the apartment again.
104. "Shopping" 20 Jul 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine
Bob and Margaret go to the Super Save Shopatropolis to save money but
only have a tiring experience.
106. "The Holiday" 27 Jul 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: Alison Snowden
Bob and Margaret plan a vacation in Crete, leaving the dogs at Buttons
Kennels, which has the aura of the Bates Motel. Bob's fear of flying
becomes apparent during the flight, so he takes a tranquilizer. But is
the tranquilizer causing him to hallucinate that terrorists have taken
over the flight, murdering one stewardess (in graphic fashion) and
pushing two passengers out of the plane? In the meantime, the Bates Motel
atmosphere is not real, and the kennel owner treats the animals well.
108. "For Peter's Sake" 21 Sep 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: Alison Snowden
Bob and Maragret agree to watch Bob's brother's difficult children,
but the visit turns out to be extended.
109. "Friends for Dinner" 28 Sep 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine
Bob is ecstatic that after hosting them to several dinners, friends
Neal and Moira have invited the Fishes over for dinner, so he decides
to eat nothing. Only dinner turns out to be after dinner conversation,
wine, and a board game. The Fishes scarf down the few snacks offered
to them. They play the board game "What Would You Do?" which is like
Scruples, in which a moral dilemma is offered to one person, and the
others guess how he would handle the situation. Neal and Moira end up
being not very moral, and Margaret blows up because they think she is
not very moral either.
105. "Love's Labours Lost" 5 Oct 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: Alison Snowden
What appears to be an attraction between Bob and his assistant Penny
ends up being Penny's attempt to ask for a raise. Bob decides against
it, and she quits to work at a florist, even though she is allergic to
flowers. Margaret tries to assist Bob, but since she does not know
his routine, he gets impatient, and she gets angry and leaves. In
the meantime, Penny finds she is ill-suited to work at the florist.
Bob goes the florist to get flowers for her and ask her to come back,
which she does with a raise.
110. "The Dental Convention" 12 Oct 1998
D: Jamie Whitney
W: Peter Baynham (teleplay); David Fine & Alison Snowden (story)
[TV-14]
While tending to a talkative patient, Bob discovers a problem with his
own teeth and has Penny make an appointment with another dentist. He
learns about the annual dental convention, to be held in Hamburg.
Unfortunately for Bob, Penny makes the appointment with Bob's old
dental school classmate, Bernard Wiggins, who has become a Harley
Street practicioner. He convinces Bob to give a speech on
state-supported dentistry (which Bob does and he doesn't) in place of an
ailing colleague in exchange for free service of the root canal he needs.
Bob frets over the speech, knowing he hates public speaking, and has
nightmares of being naked while stumbling over his speech. He is
prepared to flush his notes down the toilet when Margaret convinces him to
give it. Dr. Wiggins gives a flashy but incoherent speech full of
buzzwords, and then it's Bob's turn. He improvises a few lines and tells
a few jokes and becomes a hit, but draws the ire of Dr. Wiggins at whose
practice he takes shots. Bob is repaid with a free root canal using
ancient, painful instruments.
111. "Discomfort of Strangers" 19 Oct 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine & Alison Snowden
[TV-PG-SV]
Margaret's coldness to Bob leads them to talk about their love life,
and they realize they are taking each other for granted. They agree to
go away for their anniversary weekend to Cheddar, where they honeymooned.
Out of the blue and very early in the morning, Bob's Canadian cousin,
Melvin Fish, calls to invite himself and his wife, Cookie, over during
the week leading up to Bob and Margaret's getaway weekend, and beyond.
When they show, Bob realizes they invited themselves over while he was
asleep on the phone. His cousins spend a lot of time complaining about
the cost of everything and how things work so much better in Canada. As
the weekend approaches, Bob firmly but kindly lets them know he and
Margaret are going away to Cheddar, and the cousins invite themselves
along, with the promise, ultimately broken, not to bother them. While
strolling along the cliffs of Cheddar, Cookie falls over and has to be
rescued by helicopter. They bid farewell to Melvin and Cookie as they
leave to go to the hospital, and Bob and Margaret resume their getaway.
112. "Trick or Treat" 26 Oct 1998
D: Jamie Whitney W: David Fine & Alison Snowden
Bob receives an announcement of a funeral for a former classmate he
does not remember. His mother also calls and asks him to take her to
his father's gravesite, on the anniversary of his death. These two
events depress him. Bob and Margaret meet an insurance salesman at
the funeral, and Bob considers getting a lot of life insurance. The
trip to the cemetary starts out bad when they see that the church and
cemetary have been replaced by a shopping mall, although the headstones
were saved, and they find his father's. Bob does learn that the reason
his mother asks HIM (instead of Peter) to take her to the cemetary: he
was his father's favorite. He also learns that Peter is her favorite.
Note: Bob's father's name was Cecil.
