ABOUT THE SHOW:

"Hanging In" has a long, convoluted history for a show that lasted
four episodes. The following information is derived from Brooks, Tim,
and Marsh, Earl, "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and
Cable TV Shows: 1946-Present," 6e, (New York: Ballantine, 1995).

For the last two episodes of the show "Maude" ("Maude's Big Move, pts.
2 and 3"), Maude was appointed to fill the term of a congressman who
had died while in office. However, Bea Arthur had grown tired of the
role and declined to continue. Executive producer Norman Lear still
believed in the idea and hired former "Good Times" father John Amos to
replace Arthur, along with a change of title. A pilot was filmed, but
artistic disagreements broke out between Amos and the production staff,
and Amos left. He was replaced with Cleavon Little and a new pilot with
a new title was filmed, but Little's performance was denounced as being
demeaning to blacks, so this version was shelved. Finally, the setting
was changed to a university, and the congressman was changed to a dean.
Bill Macy, who played Maude's husband, was given a new name and the
starring role in yet another pilot, this one accepted. Most of the cast
of this version had appeared in the three previous version. Sadly, the
show was cancelled after just four weeks.

"Hanging In" was a T. A. T. Communications Company production. The
executive producer was Norman Lear. The show was produced by Sy Rosen.
The theme was by Bill Byers; the videotape editor was George Zimmermann.
