Pop singers and film stars are paid too much money, as they do nothing useful for society. Discuss.

The big ball in the sky is covered with blackness. The gods must be angry. The water will flood the land. Is there enough food for the cold winter? Long ago people of the past had to struggle to survive against the power of nature. They had little time to think about entertainment.

The modern, affluent and developed world is saturated with entertainment. Whilst poorer countries like Africa still struggle against famine and flood almost every corner of the world, however remote has some access to television or cinemas. Throughout the world more people will have heard of Michael Jackson and Madonna than of the President of the United States of America.

These film stars and pop singers are famous and the amounts they earn are huge. Some of them are good but many have little talent for acting or singing. They often lead wild and irresponsible lives which are full of bad habits and are not good models to copy.

However, many famous stars do a lot of good. They organize charity concerts and performances which are able to raise huge funds because of who they are. They give up their time and money to help society. Others like Jackie Chan who try to prevent young people from taking drugs and a lot of stars are also involved in environmental and social issues like Aids campaigns. They use their influence and power over their fans for good causes.

The film stars and pop idols make a lot of people relaxed in a busy and modern life. Their fashions and styles are imitated and add color and interest to people's lives. They are paid according to how popular they are and their entertainment value. Many people who contribute very little to society are also paid huge amounts like directors of companies who have no role in the company at all.

In my opinion, it is unfair to single out these stars because of the money they earn. They are actually paid to entertain and this in itself is useful. If everyone were paid according to how useful they are to society, then many people's salaries would need to be reassessed.
