![]() Despite a very talented cast and excellent visuals, "Mimic" is not quite the outstanding horror/sci-fi film that it promises to be. Although the acting is fine and the director does a good job creating atmosphere and mood, the overall movie is rather disappointing. I blame this largely on the story. Admittedly, the first quarter of the story is quite interesting with the ideas of roach-borne diseases wiping out nearly all the children and the creation of a voracious termite/mantis hybrid to combat the roach problem. However, somewhere along the way, the new species of insects have suddenly grown to human size and devoured a few people. There is no explanation about this outrageous evolution, and the writers must have assumed that the audience is going to believe anything is possible. Furthermore, the giant bugs always kill their prey except notably for the protagonist, who instead gets captured intact. Seems to me as though they have this exception for the sake of building a plot, which eventually leads to an Alien3-type situation deep down in the dark, defunct subway system. To the movie's credit, it does have its creepy moments like sticking hands in a strange crevices where anything can come out and bite and a scene where a couple pre-teens get killed in a gory manner (a rarity even in horror films). All in all, a stylish, decent but still somewhat disappointing movie let down by a faltering storyline. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the better the movie. 12 dots means it's the best of the best while zero dots means it's the worst of the worst. ** |
