A Man for All Seasons

(1966)

A Man for All Seasons

A moving story based on real happenings about writter and religious thinker Sir Thomas More (author of the great classic Utopia ) and his break with his close friend King Henry VIII over the issue of Henry's departure from the Catholic church. More understands his friend's reasons for the Papal schism and he thinks they go against the laws of God. Henry is breaking from the church not because of the many corruptions rampant in the medieval church of Rome, but rather because the king wants a divorce and the Pope will not allow it. Henry then creates his own church, the Church of England, with the English sovereign its head, but More refuses to recognize it. Because of his defiance he is scorned and imprisoned. Scofield is excellent in his Oscar winning performance as the conscienious and persecuted writter. Winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture.
