Sunset

Tumwater

Two sources mention this theater site at the north end of the Olympia Airport: Theater Catalog's 1955 index (capacity 480), and Don and Susan Sander's Washington Tour.

Photo of the marquee at the Sunset DI in Tumwater, Wash. This was taken in November 1981 and shows the damage to it. The left support pole is bent causing it to lean over and the letter panels blew out. Some of them are shown at the bottom laying on the ground.

Theater was located at 555 Israel Road S. E. Capacity was 424 cars. --Ken Layton

Tom and Jerry cartoon character mural sign on the boxoffice entrance. This sign was saved from destruction and now hangs in the Lacey Cinemas 8 plex indoor theater in Olympia, Wash. It is in the projection booth. Sadly, this beautiful and rare sign is all that was saved from the Sunset. I'm the one who saved it. --Ken Layton

This is a photo of one of the cartoon murals on the wall of the snack bar.

This is Minnie Mouse BREASTFEEDING. A similar mural is at the Harbor Drive-In in Aberdeen, Wash. --Ken Layton

(I wonder what the Disney lawyers would think...)

Opening ad for Sunset. Ken Layton went to some effort to clean up the poor microfilm source for this ad, but then I had to shrink it back down because it was too big. Still looks good enough, though.
