Oregon drive-ins

Map of Trail Drive-in, Hood River, OR and photo. Was one of the few drive-ins to survive the sale from Act III to Regal, though it didn't last long.

Photo of Frontier Drivein in Cave Junction, Oregon located at 28569 Redwood Highway (Highway 199), (and map). Submitted by Ken Layton

Photo of the HERMISTON DRIVE-IN, 355 West Theater Lane, Hermiston, Oregon, and map. That rectangular lot is the indoor theater parking lot; it's size was dictated by local ordinance. "Hermiston Drivein (Hermiston, Oregon) Theater was built in 1948 as the Grove Drivein (mistakenly listed in some sources as being in Umatilla, Oregon). Name was later changed to the Hermiston Drive-In. In 1995, additional property was purchased at the rear of the field and a 5-plex indoor theater (Hermiston Cinemas) and parking lot were constructed. -- Ken Layton."

The lot for the indoor theater cuts across the centerline of the drive-in. Photo by Ken Layton.

Drive-in projection facilities are provided in a corner of the indoor theater booth. Projection equipment includes Strong X-60-C xenon lamphouse (4,000 watt), Century "C" projector. Photo by Ken Layton.

Portland Area:

Oregon City:

Now a church. The approach to the ticket booth, with an out of place speed limit sign and speed bump are all that's left.

Map of Oregon City Drive-in in Oregon City, and photo.

Map of theater site in Beaverton. I see two names for "Drive-in Theater" on the map, one in purple to the northwest and one in black to the southeast, but neither of them seem to point to any theater lots on the map. The satelite image of the purple-lettered theater is not much help either, but I found a mostly extant drive-in nearby:

Beaverton Drive-In

Photo of 99W Drive-in, Newberg. (and map.)

Map of 104th St. Drive-in to the northwest, and Powell Blvd. Drive-In to the south, in Portland.

104th St. Drive-In:

As promised, I found the marquee still up by the site of an industrial storage area.

Even the corrugated iron fence is still in use.

Terraserver photo of the 104th site (that may be the marquee in that square by the road).

Powel Blvd Drive-In:

Near the 104th site are clear row landscaping, still kept neatly mowed to this day, though they look a little out of place.

Terraserver photo of Powel Blvd D.I.

Map of Foster Drive-in, by Gilbert neighborhood in Portland, SE 111st Dr. and Foster Road, and photo of tri-plex. This is right by the Springwater bicycle trail I used last year, and I somehow missed this site. This is a one lot tri-plex that has three seperate projection booths, rather than try to keystone to the side screens from a central building. The Weslie Horton Evil Sam page says it has been demolished and developed.

Marquee for the Motor Vu Drive-in, Mountain Home, Idaho. Photo by Linda Everett, provided by Ken Layton.

Old projector used as decoration along the entrnace road to the Motor Vu. It would make a better projector than the newer units in use at the theater, yet here it is rusting in the rain. Photo by Linda Everett, provided by Ken Layton.

Fly-ins

Thanks to Tim Thompson's Drive-in Oddities Page for these ideas.

Map of Roxy Fly-in and Drive-in, Saint Ansgar, IA (opened 1953), and photo of site today (outlines of the rows and landing field).

Actually, this was the only one on Tim's list that I can find on the more-current maps on Terraserver. The other fly-ins on his list were:

June 3, 1948 Ed Brown's Drive-In and FlyIn, Asbury Park, New Jersey

1950's "no-name" Fly-In, Belmar, New Jersey (75 cents admission for planes). Also, Belmar is right next door to Asbury Park.

1950's "no-name" Fly-In, Mobile, Alabama

1950's "no-name" Fly-In, Spearman, Texas

Canadian Drive-Ins
I have found no source yet of on-line Canadian topo maps, but through accidents of geography these Canadian sites were in included in topographic maps intended for locations on the edge of the United States:

Map of theater in Windsor, Ont.;
