The Monkees At The Movies:
Peter and the Chocolate Factory
Part Two
The big day quickly arrived, finally, for Peter to go to the Willy Wonka factory. Since the trip to the factory would be a little longer than expected, Mike and Micky decided to tag along. Peter didnt tell them where the main factory was untill the day of the trip. Mike decided to put the job search off till tomorrow. Who knows, maybe they would get an out of town job while they waited for them to come out.
It took an hour to get to where the factory was but the trip only felt like it took fifteen minutes to the excited Peter. He could barely sit still in his seat all the way there. Based on the directions they had with them, the factory would be in the middle of town. As they approached it, they realized that the directions would not be needed. A huge crowd of people had gathered in front of the gates. It would be the first time, for many of them, to see the reclusive factory owner.
Peter and the others got out of their car. They approached the front of the line. A man at the gront of the gate stopped them from going any further.
"Who are you?" He demanded of them.
"Golden ticket holder Peter Tork!" Peter reported while holding his ticket aloft.
"You gotta be kidding. This was a contest for kids. You're just a little too old sir." He said sniffing his contempt at Peter.
"Now hold on just a minute." Mike said. "This here fine print never says anything about being too old for the contest." He said in Peters defense.
"Hes quite right." Another man said.
"Okay he can come in too. We're waiting for Mr Wonka. You are the last to arrive."
"Thanks Mike." Peter said.
"Don't mention it." Mike said.
"Ow!" Davy said as he was pushed a side. "Watch it, you moron!"
"What?" He heard a female voice. He turned to see who spoke. It was a little girl. She looked very sweet. "Daddy he called me a moron! Move out of my way!" She said. Okay not so sweet.
"You watch it!" Davy said. "You shoved me first!"
"What are you gonna do about it?" She asked.
"Maybe hit back?"
"You would never hit a lady!" She said.
"Maybe not, but I would consider hitting you!" Davy said. "Who does she think she is?"
"Veruca Salt, Golden Ticket winner!" Her father beamed.
"There goes Peters hope that someone good was gonna win." Micky said.
"Daddy!" Veruca whined. The foursome winced. "He said I wasnt any good! Do something."
"Here." Her dad said. He handed Davy a hundred dollars. Mikes eyes popped out.
"Wow, whatever it is you're doing, keep it up, we can keep our pad for a year!" Mike uttered.
Davy didn't get a chance to respond, as the men who they were talking to earlier rounded up Veruca, her father, Peter and Davy to get to the front of the gate. The other contest winners, a kid in a cowboy outfit;Mike Teevee, a gal in a purple outfit; Violet Beaureguard, and and a large boy; Augustus Gloop, were there with their respective moms or dads. Peter remembered hearing their names when they each found their golden tickets.
"See you later, Peter." Micky said.
"And don't forget us when you're rich and famous!" Mike said.
"No problem Marty!" Peter said.
"Thats Mike!" Mike shouted.
The crowd started to get impatient as the wait for Mr Wonka grew longer and longer.
"Daddy! Make him come out! I want to go in!" Veruca cried out.
"It'll be soon darling." Her father promised.
"I hope he comes out soon, its getting awfully stuffy in this crowd." Davy said.
"Yea, and that little girl might run out of chewing gum." Peter said noting the girl in the purple outfit, Violet.
"No problem Mister!" She said. "I have enough for two days." She happily said. She pulled a giant wad out of her mouth. "Want some?"
"Take a rain check on that?" Peter smiled.
"Rain check? Whats that?" She asked.
Before Peter could answer, the main door to the factory opened. A man walked stiffly forward from the threshold. He held a cane in one hand.
"This must be him." Davy said.
"Has to be, but I didnt think he would be so old." Peter said.
"Why do you thinks hes old?" Davy asked.
"Theres a old man at the park who walks like that."
"Either that or hes eaten way too much of his chocolate." Davy said.
"Oh no, a smart business man never has too much of his own product." Peter said. Davy looked at him. "Wouldnt want to be accused of favoritism."
Davy nodded though what he said made no sense. Willy stopped a few feet in front of the door. He seemed to fall foward which caused the crowd to go "ahhhh" with worry. He did a little roll and sprung up. He signaled for the door to open.
"Are you The golden ticket winners?" He asked the group. Peter nodded and held his up for him to see. Augustus made a weird burping sound. Violet and Mike presented their tickets as well. Veruca wasnt as patient.
"When do we get in already?" She practically yelled.
"What a charming little child." Willy said looking at Veruca.
"Wheres the chocolate?" Violet asked, showing just about as much restraint.
"Would you like to see it? It's right this way." He said as he lead the group through the door. He turned to them as he walked. "I'd like to welcome you all to my factory." Willy then turned and continued to lead the way into the factory. Not everyone was paying attention, however. Mike was trying to get himself on tv. Peter turned to look into the crowd hoped for a familiar sight. He did, and it wasnt Mike or Micky.
"Thats Slugworth." He pointed out to Davy. Davy turned and looked but he couldnt see anyone that well. "Well he was there a minute ago."
"If hes the guy you mentioned, the man who runs the compeiting chocolate factory, why would he be here?"
"Who knows." Peter said as they entered the front door. "I don't."
Shortly after going inside, Willy took the group to the coat room. Since Peter and Davy didnt wear coats or jackets, they just had to wait. The others got a surprise as they put their coats and hats away. The racks on the walls looked like hands. They came alive as the coats came close to them. They grabbed the coats and held on tight.
"Little surprises around every corner but nothing dangerous. Don't be alarmed. And as soon as your outer vestments are in hand, we'll begin. Now. Will the children kindly step up here." Willy said moving back several curtains to reveal what looked like a large sheet of paper.
"A contract!" Peter said looking at it.
"Very good." Willy said to him.
"I dont know if he should sign it." Davy said voicing his concern to Willy, as the others were. "He almost sold his soul to the devil once!"
Peter nodded. "It's true. All for a harp."
"I'm with him." Violets father said. "I'm not about to sign anything without being able to read the whole thing, OR having my lawyer here first."
Violet complained about not being able to read what it said at the bottom.
"More of that blimey un-fine print." Davy remarked.
"Will you be the first to sign?" Willy offered a pen to Violet.
"Oh no, she not signing anything." Violets dad said.
"She can't go in then." Willy said sadly.
"I want to go in there! You can't stop me!" Veruca enthused taking the pen.
"Are you kidding? A freight train couldnt stop 'er." Davy muttered.
Violet signed, as well as Augustus and Mike. Peter was the last to sign.
"I hope you know what you are doing." Davy said.
"It'll be fine. We're in Willys good hands. What could possibly happen?" Peter smiled.
"I'm afraid to get an answer to that!"
They gathered around a door that had a combination safe lock. Even packed around the door they could still hear little precious Veruca.
"Let's go in, come on!" She shouted.
"Patience, patience, little dear. Everything has to be in order. Everyone's signed? Yes. Good. On we go!" He fiddled with the lock." Ninety-nine . . . forty-four . . . one hundred percent pure. "He pushes open the door. "Just through the other door please."
They walked through the door but soon came to a dead stop.
"What door?" Peter asked.
"I don't see no other door." Davy agreed.
Verucas father looked around. "Uh Wonka there some mistake here..."
"There has to be another door somewhere." Willy said.
"Just the one we came in!" Mike said.
"I know its around here somewhere." Willy said looking around.
"Let me out or I'll scream!" Veruca said.
"If she screams, I will too." Davy said.
"Someones touching me!!" Mikes mother said.
"Sorry!" Peter said throwing up his hands.
Verucas father moved again."Now look here, Wonka . . ."
Willy cut him off. "Excuse me, question time will come at the end of the session. We must press on. Come along . . . come along . . . Ah, here we are."
Violets father scoffed. "Oh, don't be a darn fool, Wonka; that's the
way we came in."
"It is? Are you sure?" Willy asked.
"We've just come through there." Verucas father agreed.
"Huh. How do you like that?" He leans against the door; it opens. The crowd emits "Oh"s and "Aw"s.
"Its a whole different room." Violet said.
"I want to go back!" Someone from the back said.
"Oh, you can't get out backwards. You've gotta go forwards to go back. Better press on."
"This is weird." Davy said.
"Not more than your ordinary funhouse." Peter said.
The next hallway seemed to get smaller as they moved forward n it. They reached a small door at the end of it.
"Hey, maybe you can fit through that door Davy." Peter laughed.
"Ah hahaha. Laugh. It's cause I'm short isnt it?" He asked.
"No one can fit through that door!" Verucas father said.
"This is a musical lock." Willy said as he played a musical note on his small flute.
"Hmm, we could make a song out of that." Peter said.
"Think someone beat us to it." Davy said.
"Ladies and gentlemen . . . boys and girls . . ." Willy said as the door opened. "The chocolate room."
The eyes of group almost popped out of their head. There was chocolate everywhere, and everywhere there wasnt chocolate there was other kinds of confections. The kids ran wild, running all over the room, tasting everything. Peter was tempted to join them but he was stopped by Davy.
"Maybe we should just look, not touch." He suggested.
"You're just jealous you dont see any figgy pudding." Peter politely ribbed him.
"True." Davy said. "All right. We'll have a looksee. Just try not to fill up all at once. We still have a long way to go!"
Mike and Micky got back to the factory after looking around the neighborhood. To Mikes disapointment, there wasnt any places that needed a band at this point in time. They had only gone a couple of blocks in each direction, but it seemed like it was hopeless jobwise. All they could do now was wait in the car for their friends.
"How much longer can they be?" Micky asked.
"Its a large factory." Mike said. "It's gonna take a while."
Micky sighed. "I hope it don't take much longer. Davy has several dates tomorrow."
Mike laughed and turned to his newspaper. He started to read again as something caught his eye. A man was creeping near the back entrance of the factory.
"Whos that?" Mike asked.
"Who?" Micky asked.
"The guy who looks like a mugger at the back of the factory." Mike said. "Dark clothes, funny hat."
"Maybe he works there." Micky offered while reading his comic.
"What did Peter say about that man, Slugworth?" Mike asked.
"He wanted Peter to get him something from the factory." Micky said sitting up. "He never said what he looked like."
"I think we ought to check this guy out." Mike said. "He might be this Slugworth guy and up to no good."
"Its a good idea. At least if it isnt this Slugworth guy, then we'll have something to do."
"Whats this?" Peter asked as they approached what looked like a moat, or a river.
Augustus mother shook her head. "What a disgusting, dirty river."
"It's industrial waste, that. You've ruined your watershed, Wonka. It's polluted." Verucas father said.
"It's chocolate." Willy said.
"That's chocolate?!?" Veruca asked incredulously.
"That's chocolate." Peter sighed.
"A chocolate river." Violet said.
Davy nodded: "That's the most fantastic thing I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot!"
Willy explained the purpose of the river."Ten thousand gallons an hour. And look at my waterfall. That's the most important thing. It's mixing my chocolate. It's actually churning my chocolate. You know, no other
factory in the world mixes its chocolate by waterfall. But it's the only way if you want it just right . . "
"There are little men across the river!" Violet said.
"Who are they?" Davy asked.
"Arent they relatives of yours?" Veruca said.
"Ha ha." Davy made a face.
"They are Oompa Loompas. They came here to work for me." Willy explained. "I took them away a very bad place, Loompaland. There are such monsters there that would think nothing of eating some of them for breakfast." He demurred.
"That is so sad." Peter said.
"I want an Oompa Loompa." Veruca said.
"I'll get you one dear." Her father said.
"I want one now!" She shouted.
"She needs one like she needs another mouth." Davy said to Peter. Veruca turned and looked at him.
"I heard you!" She said.
"Well I didn't whisper did I?" Davy said.
Just then they spotted Augustus at the chocolate river gulping it up in one hand.
"Oh ew, at least use a straw!" Peter said.
"Oh, uh, Augustus, please, don't do that. My chocolate must never be touched by human hands. Plea--don't do that! Don't do that; you're contaminating my entire river. Please, I beg you, Augustus." Willy said frantically. Augustus slipped and fell in.
"Uh oh." Peter said. They watched in shock as he flailed around trying to get back to the side of the river. He was then pulled under. He vanished.
"Oh he's had it now, the suctions got him." Willy said.
The next time they saw him he was rising slowly through a tube. He started to get stuck.
"I've heard of taking the tube to work, but thats ridiculous!" Davy said.
"How will he get out?" Peter asked.
"Well you know how Micky makes his spitballs sometimes?"
"Do I ever." Peter said.
"Well he blows on the end of the tube, and the pressure builds until whatever is in there cant take no more. It then blows him out. Poo!"
Just as he said that, Augustus got unstuck. He was blown out of sight.
"Poo is right." Peter said.
"Where is he going?" Augustus mother asked. "The marshmellow room?"
"Oh no. Never. The fudge room." Willy said taking out his whistle. He blew a little tune which called some of the Oompa Loompas over. "Please take Mrs Gloop to the fudge room. But be careful, her little boy may end up in the boiler." Willy reassured her. "Nihil desperandum, dear lady. Across the desert lies the promised land. Goodbye, Mrs. Gloop. Adieu! Auf wiedersehen! Gesundheit. Farewell." He waved to her as the Oompa Loompas took her away.
"Now what?" Peter asked Davy as the Oompa Loompas sang a song. "Davy?"
"I'm sorry its this tune. It can get into ones head." He looked at Peter. "What?"
"What now?" He asked.
"I guess we follow Willy. Its not like Augustus is coming back. Is he?" Davy asked.
"Hope hes all right." Peter said.
"He will be, I don't think Willy would really let us be hurt, or would he?" He thought that last part.
