Aliens (1986)--Number 13 on nothingman's Top 30
Albino Alligator (1997)-Three criminals get holed up in a basement bar with only one way out--and they're surrounded. Pretty interesting considering the whole thing takes place in a bar, but that's also the downside to it--it all takes place in the bar. Director Spacey does a good job in his debut though, and the cast is pretty good as well. The shot in the beginning where the guy flies out of the car is very well done. B-
Antz (1998)-This movie was visually stunning and it had a pretty good plot as well. It was pretty funny too. Woody Allen was terrific as "Z" the ant who's tired of conforming with the colony. All the stars who lend thier voices are really good and make the ants seem to come to life, but that also needs to be credited to the amazing animation. A good little movie.B+
Apt Pupil (1998)- Well, I loved "Usual Suspects" and this movie was, well, okay. It had some good stuff in it, but it seemed like it should have been a lot scarier, or maybe could have been scarier. Brad Renfro got pretty annoying throughout, making me want to slap the piss out of him. Ian McKellan was better and saved the film from just being awful. I don't know, it just could have been better. B-
Armageddon (1998)-I enjoyed this film so much I saw it twice! It was very entertaining and fast paced and funny--man was it funny. Entertainment Weekly called director Michael Bay the devil for his mainstream-ness, but he makes one helluva movie. It was rather predictable, but hey its a disaster movie and it tugged at the whole heartstrings for all the daddy's out there--at least for me. I'd recommend it--its the definition of a summer movie. Babe: Pig in the City (1998)-I really enjoyed the first film, but this one seemed to lack the hurrah of the first. It lacked that rooting for the underdog type feeling. This movie was good, but just didn't live up to the originall, as sequels often do. I mean, Babe does a lot of good deeds, and overcomes many obstacles, and once again saves the farm, but it isn't the same as the first one. It's much more surreal than the first for one, and it takes on a much darker tone. But it's still worth a peek, the talking animals are pretty cool. B+
Back To The Future (1985)--Number 27 on Nothingman's Top 30
BASEketball (1998)-Two idiots invent a new game "BASEketball" where they combine baseball and basketball and create a new phenomenon in sports. Very spotty comedy, but the parts that are funny are hilarious. I liked this because it has some respectable TV personas (Robert Stack, Al Michaels, Bob Costas) making complete asses out of themselves. Stone and Parker are pretty out there too, which is fun to watch. B+
Beetlejuice (1988)-I checked this one out again after a long time and it surprised me--some of the effects are simply amazing and the score was really catchy--I'm an Elfman fan now. But otherwise, it's also a really good film, and it has that "Burton" touch. He's got that weird, sick twisted sense of humor and it makes this film work. Michael Keaton steals the show, however, as the title character. B+
Big (1988)-I saw "You've Got Mail" and it reminded me of the old Hanks and I had to check this out and was awed again at his performance in this. He's always been a good actor and in this film he makes you believe he's 12 years old from the get-go. Then he becomes the adult he is on the outside, and you feel for him because he's been corrupted by the adult world. But most of you have probably already seen this. Famous moment: Chopsticks on the human keyboard. A-
Big Lebowski, The (1998)-This move was pretty cool man. The story is there, but...but the Coen Bros. mostly put together a bunch of really interesting characters and let us feed off of them. Bridges, Goodman, Turturro, they're all good. Especially Goodman. It wasn't a splendid follow-up to "Fargo", but it just seems like they were having fun with htis anyway, and it's just that, a lot of fun. B
Boogie Nights (1997)--Number 12 on Nothingman's Top 30
Breakfast Club, The (1985)-When 5 students with different backgrounds are all supposed to spend the day in detention together, hmmmm, what's going to happen. They of course start to learn more things about each other than they thought they ever would and eventually overcome their most obvious of differences and realize that deep down, they are all struggling with the same fight--the one against parental authority. Funny, and touching at times, this movie is good entertainment. B
C
Can't Hardly Wait (1998)-I really enjoyed this film (and not because I think Jennifer Love Hewitt is a hottie--which I do) but because it was so damn funny. They really let you get to know the characters and then throwing them all into the same party and seeing what happened was very enjoyable. I especially liked Kenny--the wannabe brother and his assurance that one of his "10 very lucky finalists" will actually be willing to have sex with him. Another plus: the geek's lip synching to "Paradise City" was a riot.B+
City of Angels (1998)-Angel Nicolas Cage falls for human doctor Meg Ryan and has to decide if he wants to "fall" and become human or keep his current position as an angel. Quite moving at the end and you really feel for Cage, or at least I did. Good performances all around. I would have liked to see more with Cage adjusting to his new life as a human, but other than that, it was a pretty good flick and a nice love story. B+
Clean Slate (1994)-Dana Carvey can't remember anything when he wakes up in the morning and he's supposed to testify against a mob boss!!! It's not very funny and it wastes Carvey's talents as a comedian. it has some funny parts, but overall...C
Clockwatchers (1998)-The politics of temps are explored in this funny comedy. Constantly ignored and stepped on, 4 temps confide i neach other until someone in the office begins stealing stuff and it breaks the group apart. B
Clockwork Orange, A (1971)-Number 7 on Nothingman's Top 30
