Jack: I can't be what I ain't.
Dave: A scab?
Jack: No, smart.
The scene fades out. It reopens at the restaurant with Sarah and Dave sitting across from Jack and Les at a booth.
Dave: So why'd you do it?
Jack: What?
Dave: Sell us out like that?
Waiter walks up with their drinks. He is barely acknowledged by the four.
Jack: You really wanna know don't you?
Les: Speaking to Dave
I told ya he was spyin on 'em!
To Jack So what did ya find
out? Huh Jack? Tell him what ya found out!
Jack: Well Les I found out that...
He hesitates
...that we've got Joe scared. He won't
stop till he's stopped us...no matter what the cost. We gotta do somethin
to stop him first.
Sarah: What do you have in mind? I mean how are we going to beat out them?
Jack: I don't know, but I bet Dave does. Looks at Dave So Dave what are ya thinkin?
Sarah: Excitedly Dave, remember the article? Denton's article on the rally? Couldn't we use that?
Dave: I don't see...
Jack interrupts
Jack: That's it! Alls we gotta do is print our own article!
Dave: There's a printing ban on everything about the strike, Jack.
Jack: Yeah, I know. I know. But where I'm stayin' there's a printin press. One of Joe's old presses.
Dave: What do we know about writing papes though?
A smile spreads across Jack's face...Dave's eyes light up...Sarah grins.
Les: What? What?
They jump up from the table, and leave. Les runs back with the money to pay the bill. Fades out. Scene opens with Sarah, Jack, and Dave walkin down the street towards the lodging house around dusk. They are without Les, and now have Denton's article.
Dave: Why? Why did you do it?
Jack: You aren't gonna let it lay.
Dave: No. I have a right...the Newsies have a right to know why.
Jack: All right...here it is Pulitzer he offered me money. A chance to make somethin of myself.
Dave: His eyes narrow A bribe?
Jack: Yeah a bribe, but a real good one. He also said he'd get a hold the rest of you guys, and put ya in the refuge if I didn't cooperate.
Dave: So he threatened you and bribed you?
Sarah: That's horrible.
Jack: Yeah well...it's all in the past now.
Arrive at the lodging house. Black out. Lights come up on everyone leaving the lodging house. Jack seems to have been forgiven.
Racetrack: Glad to have ya back Jack!
Jack: Really?
Racetrack: Yeah...you made me five bits richer. I knew you'd be back. Thanks Specs!
Jack: Thanks for backin' me up.
Kid Blink: What's wrong with you?
Dave: Enough. The rest of you go wait outside Jack's "new place." (Grins) We'll (referring to Sarah, Jack, and himself) go to Denton's and do a little convincing.
They split up, and the lights fade out.
