For years one question has been has been bothering millions (heehee...) of fanatic Newsies fans:
What is a knockwurst?
Is it a giant wurst to hit people with?
Is it a wurst that has to be knocked before you can eat it because it would run away otherwise?
Is it a wurst made from the meat of the seldom "knockbird"?
No, it's nothing like this.
Here's the answer:
Actually, there isn't such a thing as a "knockwurst". What is advertised on the boards at Tibby's is a "KnAckwurst".
"Wurst" is, at you most probably know, the German word for a sausage.
"Knacken" is a word describing a sound like the one resulting if you crack nuts.
The "Knackwurst" is called this because, if you break one, there is - yes, you guessed it, the sound. :)
So, this is the answer to the big "Knockwurst"-question. That simple. Hope you're not too disappointed!
