The meanings of the names are all basically puns, especially Usagi's. Also if you've noticed all the jokes and stuff you can now understand them: her love for rabbits, her hairstyle resembles rabbit ears, and how she hates carrots!

There is also some Mythology behind the names. In Asian culture, there is a myth of a Rabbit on the Moon. As Usagi is Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, you can see that relation.
In Asian mythology there are Five Elements: Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth.
The powers of the Senshi are related to the kanji of the names. The Inner Senshi are based on the five elementes. Mercury has Water, Mars has Fire, Jupiter has Wood, and Venus has Metal... but her powers are mostly related to the fact that Venus is the goddess of love and beauty. Neptune's kanji is the Ocean/Sea, Uranus' is the Sky, although her attack is World Shaking. Uranus represents the Heavens, Neptune the Abyss and Pluto the Transformation. I dont really know about Saturn, I cant seem to find anyone who does either, just that she represents Death and Silence. Saturns kanji is the missing element, Earth. The kanji for Sailormoon is simply Moon, which isnt really an element. She represents purity and that is mainly what she does.
The Senshi also have Zodiac Signs, and these are also astrologically correct. Usagi is a Cancer, born June 30, and Cancer's guardian planet is the Moon. Ami is a Virgo with the guardian planet of Mercury. Get it? :)
Blood Type is also noted and imortant in Japan. Beliefs of personality types are related to the type of blood you have.
