A Hard Rain's A-gonna Fall
Bob Dylan
from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, 1963

The transcription is my own, as are any mistakes.

Capo 4, top E tuned down to C

Note->  CADGBe
        ++++++
C: 032010
Fmaj7: 003210 (Hammering onto the 3rd and 4th strings.
Probably should be a real F, but Dylan
makes his hammers easy by just keeping
his index finger in place on the 2nd
                string.)
F: 003211
G(III): 005433 (Dylan slides his F up to this G at the
third fret during the repetitive sections)
G: 220000 (Really an Em7 or G6, this is Dylan's
standard "G" chord when he's playing
                in dropped C tuning)

(Be sure to strum all the bass strings to keep the
droning C note going.)

Intro: C Fmaj7 C

    C Fmaj7 C (hammer 5th string)
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
    C G
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
     F G(III) C
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
     F G(III) C
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
     F G(III) C
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
     F G(III) C
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
          F G(III) C
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard

CHORUS:
            C G C F
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
           C G C Fmaj7 C
And it's a hard rain's a gonna fall

Oh what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh what did you see, my darlin' young one?
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept dripping
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleeding
I saw 10 thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children

(Chorus)

Oh what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
Oh what did you hear, my darlin' young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder as it roared out a warning
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard 10 thousand whispering and nobody listening
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughing
I heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
I heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley

(Chorus)

And who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
And who did you meet, my darlin' young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred

(Chorus)

Oh what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh what'll you do now, my darlin' young one?
I'm going back out before the rain starts a-fallin'
Where I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where home and the valley meet the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, and none is the number
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect from the mountains so all souls can see it
And I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'

(Chorus)
