Swanee
Jaye P. Morgan
Words by Irving Caesar
Music by George Gershwin
Mary Margaret "Jaye P." Morgan's third-biggest hit,
released as the B-side of her Top 10 two-sided hit single "The Longest Walk."
Cover version of the smash hit made famous by Al Jolson in 1920, from his Broadway musical "Sinbad"
Peaked at # 6 in 1955
I've been away from a long time
I never thought I'd miss you so
Somehow, I feel, your love was real
Near you I long to be
(The birds are singin', it is songtime)
(The banjo's strummin' soft and low)
I know that you yearn for me, too
Swanee, you're callin' me
Swanee, how I love ya, how I love ya, my dear old Swanee
I'd give the world to be among the folks in D-I-X
I-Even know my mammy's waitin' for me, prayin' for me
Down by the Swanee
The folks up North will see me no more
When I get to that Swanee shore
Swanee (Swanee) Swanee (Swanee)
I'm comin' back to Swanee (to Swanee)
Mammy (Mammy) Mammy (Mammy)
I love the old folks at home
Swanee, how I love ya, how I love ya, my dear old Swanee
I'd give the world to be among the folks in D-I-X
I-Even know my mammy's waitin' for me, prayin' for me
Down by the Swanee
The folks up North will see me no more
When I go to the Swanee shore
TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE:
Gershwin and Caesar obviously pay tribute herewith to Stephen Collins Foster's
1851 composition, "Old Folks At Home" (a\k\a "Way Down Upon the Swanee River").
The river that gave rise to that title is properly spelled SUWANEE and it runs
through Florida and Georgia to the Gulf Of Mexico.
For more info on how Foster chose that river, see http://www.bobjanuary.com/foster/sf9.htm
