Danny Boy
Words and music by Frederick Weatherly-1913
Adapted from the traditional Irish
"Londonderry Air" c.1855
Oh Danny boy the pipes the pipes are calling
from glen to glen and down the mountainside
the summer's gone and all the leaves are falling
'tis you 'tis you must go and I must bide
but come ye back when summer's in the meadow
or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy I love you so
but when ye come and all the flow'rs are dying
if I am dead as dead I well may be
ye'll come and find the place where I am lying
and kneel and say an ave there for me
and I shall hear though soft you sing above me
and all my grave shall warmer sweeter be
for you shall kneel and tell me that you love me
and I shall sleep in peace until you come to me

Greetings---
Here we go again. Let's summarize the last "Danny Boy" thread.
1. The tune commonly called "Londonderry Air" is a traditional
one, originally published as "Irish Tune from County Derry" in the
mid-19th century.
2. The lyrics of "Danny Boy," set to that tune, were written by
Frederick Weatherly, an English attorney and song writer, in 1913.
3. Other lyrics exist, such as "Would God I Were the Tender Apple
Blossom," by Katherine Tynan Hinkson.
4. The best known orchestral arrangement is by Percy Grainger.
5. Some folks suggest it's time to get London out of Derry. Please
note, however, that opinion in this matter is sharply divided. :-)
6. Christine Keeler became notorious for peddling her London
derriere. :-) :-)
Hope this settles the matter for once and for all. :-) :-) :-)
Kindest regards,
Steve Suffet
