Yeah, yeah, Scott Caan knows he looks like his dad, James. (He's an actor. Maybe you've heard of him?) But in just a few years Scott has gone from being a hard-partying hothead to playing hard-partying hotheads in films like Varsity Blues and Boiler Room. With a role in the star-studded remake of Ocean's Eleven on deck, Scott discusses the pros and...well, you know...of his family tradition.
Let's see here...George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Scott Caan. What's wrong with this picture?
I'm totally out of place. Casey Affleck and I play Mormon brothers who get hired to do the heist, and we're the comic relief. Everybody else has a specific talent - all we know how to do is drive cars.
Ocean's Eleven was shot on location in Las Vegas. Is legalized prostitution as great as it sounds?
You know what? I didn't find out about that until I got home. I was in a bar one night, and this girl is sitting there. I was, like, "Hey, what's up? How you doing?" And she's, like, "How are you? Do you want to go up to your room?" I was, like "Wow! Maybe you want me to buy you a drink first?"
We understand the town's also known for gambling. Did you have time for a game of keno?
I stuck to blackjack and craps. I play by the book, so I came out on top. Casey was down big at one point and Matty (Damon) was up and down, but nobody got killed. This one morning, though, we were shooting at the Bellagio at, like, 5:15, and there's this guys at a craps table with about $100,000 worth of chips, and he's rolling by himself. I saw him crap out three times in a row and lose about $40,000 in six seconds. I was, like, "Dude, go have a fuckin' milk shake or something."
Speaking of losing your shirt, why are you so eager to drop trou in all your movies?
I've been like that since I was a kid. I'd be at a party, and someone would say, "You can have this pack of cigarettes if you run up and down the street naked." As long as it wasn't an empty dare, I'd do it.
Did you pick up these traits from hanging around your father?
I'm amazed at how much he dug being in my life. I was born right when he was at the top of his game, and he just decided, I want to spend time with my kid. He coached my baseball team. I remember an umpire called one of our players out, and he clearly wasn't, so my dad chased the umpire around the field. The umpire had to lock himself behind a fence - and he was he one with a bat in his hands.
Growing up, how many times did he subject you to The Godfather?
When I was 11 years old, I finally sat down to watch it, and I freaked when they machine-gunned Sonny. I had to call him to ask if he was all right. He was, like, "Yeah, I'm fine. What are you talking about?"
How did you explain a movie like Ready to Rumble to him?
I didn't. I said, "Don't go see it." And he said, "Great, OK."
So if Frank, Dean, and the gang came back from Rat Pack heaven and saw the new film, what would they say?
They'd say, "Fuck, where was that Steven Soderbergh cat when we made our movie?"
