One Life borrows AIDS
quilt
by Michael Logan
Determined to climax One Life To Live's landmark homophobia
storyline with outdoor scenes featuring the AIDS quilt, executive
producer Linda Gottlieb approached the Names Project Foundation
for permission and was turned down flat. According to the foundation's
executive director, David Lemos, "The quilt is a historical
artifact that's only been displayed outdoors in Washington, D.C., and
there's great concern for its protection." But Gottlieb - who would only
take "yes" for an answer - powwowed further with Lemos and convinced him
to go back to his board of trustees and beg. The result: One Life To
Live will be loaned 256 of the quilt's 15,000-plus panels (each
honoring the memory of a person who has died from AIDS), and they will be
incorporated into the soap around Labor Day. Says Lemos: "We came to the
realization that this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to raise the
awareness of millions. They may not be inclined toward activism, but
they're really no different than the thousands of family members and
friends who have built the quilt."
