Dorian enters in a skimpy outfit.) Dorian: Ta-da! What do you think? Wanda! Wanda: You? You’re doing drugs with her? (Jason continues to look befuddled.) --- BLAIR’S APARTMENT (Addie, Max, Blair) Max: Am I right? Are you Blair’s mother? Well, sure you are! Well, what do you know! Blair, you’re not as mysterious as you make out. Here you are living with your mother, and she is such a sweet and mighty pretty lady. (Gets roses and gives them to Addie.) Pretty flowers for the pretty lady. Hey, look, I picked them a while ago. The quicker you get them into water, the better. Kind of shy, eh? (To Blair) What’s wrong with you? Blair: With me? Max: Yeah, keeping your mother a secret. Funny kind of daughter, aren’t you? --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL (Viki, Clint) Viki: Why, Clint? Why did I do that? Clint: Honey, don’t do this to yourself? Viki: How could I be so stupid, knowing it would upset her like that. Clint: You have to try to calm down. Viki: I mean, to argue with her about Andrew at a time like this. I don’t even know what I was thinking. I knew it would upset her. Clint: Wait a minute. You can’t believe that just talking to her triggered all this. Viki: She is supposed to avoid all stressful situations, Larry was very clear about that. Her immune system is so damaged that the slightest little infection could-- Clint: I do not want you beating up on yourself up about this. (Enter Larry) Viki: Larry. Larry: I think you’d better come inside. --- MOUNTAINVIEW CLINIC (Alex, Hank) Alex: It was so good of you to come, Mr. Gannon. Hank: I’m a very busy man, Miss Olanov. Alex: Well, the crime rate being what it is, I’m sure most District Attorneys are. Hank: Could we get to the point please? Alex: My, my, we are busy aren’t we? Well, I wouldn’t want to take up too much of your time. I have some very good news for you. Hank: Well, I’m always up for some good news. Alex: It comes in two parts. First, I am not insane. And secondly, I am ready to bargain about those few little charges that you still have against me. --- BREAK --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL (Bo, Clint) (Enter Asa) Clint: Hi, Pa. Asa: How’s Megan? Bo: No change. Asa: Still the same? Bo: What does no change mean? Asa: Don’t get smart, Bo. Clint: Hey, hey. Bo: No, I mean I never should have called you, Pa. Clint: Hey! Bo: Why should he come in here and start throwing his weight around? Asa: Why the hell are you talking to me like this? Clint: Knock it off, the two of you. Asa: What’s the matter with you, Bo? Clint: He’s worried, Pa. Like we all are. Asa: Megan’s gotten worse? Clint: It doesn’t look good, no. Asa: Well, Bo called me. All she did was faint. Bo: No, I said she collapsed. That’s what I said to you. Collapsed! Asa: I never heard that! Bo: Well, you only hear what you want to hear! Asa: I sure as hell don’t like what I’m hearing now! Clint: I said knock it off! Now, Megan is in there, fighting for her life, and you two yo-yos are standing out here, squawking like a couple of old hens! Bo: I’m sorry, Pa. Asa: No, Bo, it’s my fault. Bo: No, I’m just so damn mad that Megan’s having to go through this after everything else she’s been through. But that’s no excuse for taking it out on you. Asa: It’s fine, it’s OK. I’m here for you. I’m here for both my sons. I’m even here for Viki. By the way, Clint, where is she? Clint: Larry let her go in with Megan. Her immune system isn’t reacting the way they’d like it to. Kidney transplant or not, dialysis or not, what we’re really dealing with is what the lupus is doing to her ability to fight infection. Now, Larry says that they’re fighting the infection - or they’re trying to - by increasing the dosages of the medication. But so far-- And what we’re really-- Well, the point is, that no matter what we do, it may not be enough. And Megan may die. (Enter Sarah) Sarah: Don’t say that. I don’t ever want to hear anyone talking like that. --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL; MEGAN’S ROOM (Megan, Viki, Larry) Viki: She’s looks so pale. Larry: Viki, why don’t you go get a cup of tea so you can relax? Megan: (Stirring, groggy) Jake? Viki: Oh, darling, no, it’s me. I’m here. Megan: Where’s Jake? He’s not here. Andrew? Andrew? --- BREAK --- RODI’S BAR (Dorian, Jason, Luna and Wanda) Wanda: Of course, of course, I should have realized. What is the matter with me? She comes in and she keeps looking at you in my restaurant. All of a sudden, this one is a steady customer in my restaurant. She comes in twice a day and idiot, idiot me, thinks it’s because she likes my clam chowder! Dorian: (To Jason) What, she thinks we’re doing drugs? Wanda: (To Jason) You are my own flesh and blood! I would think you would have some taste! Some sense! (To Dorian) And you! Why, I ought to wring your skinny little neck! You take a young, innocent boy and you lure him in with your depravity, with your sickness! Look at them eyes! Look at them crazy, wild, drug-crazed eyes. They’re like two blank holes in a blanket with all that clunky mascara. Only a person who is on drugs would wear that much makeup! Dorian: You shut up! Luna: Jason, what is going on? Dorian: I have never taken drugs in my life, I hardly even take liquor. I take one glass of wine! If I take two, I lose my-- Wanda: Oh, yeah, and because you say it, I’m supposed to believe it! Dorian: I don’t care what you believe! Luna: Wanda, Wanda-- Wanda: There’s gonna be no problems here. (To Dorian) You are a viper. And Wanda Webb Wolek does not cower in the face of viperdom! (Reaching for Dorian’s purse) Come here! Let me see what kind of-- Jason: Wanda! (Wanda and Dorian struggle over the purse as Jason tries to break them up) Jason: Look, I am not-- Wanda, stop! I am not involved in drugs! All right? Not with using, not with selling, not with her, not with anybody. OK? Wanda: Oh yeah? Why? Why should I believe that? Jason: Because that is the truth. I do not use drugs. I never have, and I’m not gonna. I never will. OK? Got that? Wanda: Well, what are you doing in here with her? Jason: Oh. We’re on a date. Wanda: A date! That’s what you wear on a date! A date? Oh no, please. What kind of date? Jason: I’m living with her, Aunt Wanda. Wanda: Her? Dorian Lord? Oh, I would rather you be doing drugs... --- BLAIR’S APARTMENT (Addie, Max, Blair) Max: Pretty lady. Blair: Thank you. Max: Just you and her? Blair: I manage. Max: No brothers or sisters? Blair: As I said, I manage. Max: What about your father? Blair: I would rather not discuss him. Max: You’d rather not discuss the whole thing. Blair: Look it’s not worth discussing, OK? Max: Both my parents are dead. I miss them. Blair: I’m sorry. Max: No, I didn’t mean for you to be sorry. What I’m talking about is, I consider you lucky. Having one parent is better than none, no matter how much trouble she can be. Blair: My mother is no trouble. Max: No? Blair: Why do you say it like that? Max: Like what? Blair: Like you’re accusing me of something. Max: No, what I’m trying to say is, I know she looks sickly, pale. And I know that taking care of a sick person can’t be easy. Blair: She’s not sick. Max: Well, then why do you keep her shut up in here? Blair: What are you really saying, Max? How dare you imply that I’m not taking care of my mother! --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL (Sarah, Asa, Bo, Clint) Sarah: Megan is not going to die, do you hear me? Clint: Sarah. Sarah: Do you hear me? Clint: Look, I didn’t mean it the way it sounded, the way you think. Sarah: You said she may. Clint: I said that there was a chance. That there was a chance she may die. But those specialists, they know what they’re doing. Sarah: She is not going to die. Asa: You’re damn right, Sarah. (Enter Viki.) Viki: Sarah. Sarah: Viki, hi. What’s happening? Were you in with her? Viki: Yes, there’s not really been any kind of change, although she opened her eyes for a few minutes. Sarah: What did she say? Viki: Nothing much. She asked for Jake. And she went back to sleep. But you can go in there with her now, if you want to. Larry’s in with her. Sarah: OK. Clint: Are you OK? Viki: I think I’d like to go for a walk. I’d like to get some fresh air. Clint: We can do anything you want to. Viki: Thanks. Clint: Excuse us. (Viki and Clint exit) Asa: Bo, I’m going to call my office and check on these doctors and see if they’re as good as they’re supposed to be. Bo: Thanks, Pa. Asa: Sarah. Sarah: Bye. (Asa exits) Bo: I’m sorry if Clint upset you. Sarah: It’s OK. Bo: Yeah, but he’s been under a lot of pressure himself. Sarah: It’s OK, I said it’s OK. I mean, Megan is going to pull through this. The rest of you may not believe that, but I now that she’s not going to-- I mean, she’s going to be OK, even if she rejects the kidney, she can always go back on dialysis. Bo: That’s what we’re praying. Sarah: No matter what Larry says about infection. Bo: Larry didn’t say that she wasn’t going to live. Sarah: Well, what exactly did he say? Bo: He said that she’s had a serious setback and we have to be prepared- Sarah: For what? Bo: Honey, we have to face the possibility that- Sarah: No, no, no! You can’t do this to Megan. She needs everyone’s strength right now. She needs us all to believe that she is going to recover. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do, all of us, do you hear me? That is what-- (breaks down in tears) Bo: Come here. Come on. You’re right. You’re absolutely right. That’s what we’re all going to do. --- MOUNTAINVEW CLINIC (Alex, Hank) Alex: Now, if you need proof as to whether I’m sane or not, just get one of those psychiatrists in here and see for yourself. I’m sure, being the District Attorney, you’re bound to have a few shrinks at your disposal. Hank: Well, interestingly enough, I had a nice little chit-chat with the examining psychiatrist just the other day. Alex: Oh really? Hank: Yes. In fact, it is his opinion that you are not insane. Alex: (Feigning sadness) I’m probably in better shape than he is. He’s a wreck. That poor man is just working too many hours. I really think you ought to lighten his caseload. Hank: I see. So you have faked your insanity before? Alex: Yes, and quite brilliantly, if I do say so myself. Hank: Interesting. Alex: No, the interesting part is coming up. I first have to get you to agree, however, that I know the difference between right and wrong. That is the legal definition of sanity, isn’t it? Hank: In a nutshell. Alex: Nice choice of words. So, according to that, I’m sane, right? --- BREAK --- RODI’S BAR (Dorian, Jason, Luna, Wanda) Wanda: Living together? Jason: Yeah. Wanda: No, you’re not living together. I want to ask you, Jason- Jason: I didn’t get the question. Wanda: Are you living together? Jason: I just told you. Wanda: Well, but, I mean you’re not just like staying at her place, or anything? I mean, you’re just staying at her place, I mean, right? I want an answer, Jason. Jason: Yeah, we are. Wanda: I think I’m going to pass out. Jason: Wanda-- Wanda: No, no, no. Don’t say the word, don’t use the word! Whatever word it was you were going to use, just don’t use that word. Jason: Well, you know, I’m just trying to really tell you what’s going on. Wanda: Oh, I know what’s going on. (Pointing at Dorian) And I know that that woman, however hard she might try to look like she’s 13 years old in that ugly outfit, whatever the hell that ugly outfit is, that woman is closer to my age than she is to your age. Dorian: Your age! Wanda, you are out of your mind! Wanda: She’s got a daughter that’s almost as old as you are. Dorian: (To Jason) Let’s get out of here. Wanda: No, no, no, you’re not going anywhere with him, no more, not ever again. Jason: Don’t do this, Aunt Wanda. All right? Don’t do this. Wanda: (To Dorian) I want you to take your cradle-snatching hands and your claws and I want you to keep them the hell off my nephew, or else I’ll-- Dorian: You will what? Make more of a fool of yourself than you already have? Jason: Will you stop it? Both of you’s, all right? Just stop it! Wanda: (To Dorian) Everybody that you ever touch gets hurt. And that includes all of the various husbands that you had, dead and alive. And that includes your kid. And that includes everybody who has ever been unlucky enough to get involved in your sordid, stinking little life! They get hurt! Yes, they get hurt real bad, and I’m telling you, I will not permit you--! (Dorian and Wanda start swatting at each other as Jason tries to keep them apart) --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL (Viki, Clint) Viki: Has it turned suddenly cold, or is it just me? Clint: Weather report says that a front’s coming in from the north. Viki: Snow? Clint: It’s possible. Viki: Did you fix Jessie’s sled? Clint: Oh, the runner, right. Remind me tomorrow, honey. Viki: Why are we talking about sleds and weather? Clint: We can talk about anything you want to. Or we don’t have to talk about anything at all. Viki: Oh God, we have to talk about something, don’t we? (Enter Kevin) Viki: Kevin, darling. You got my message. Good, I was worried. Kevin: How is she? Viki: We don’t know yet. Kevin: But they can fix it, right? I mean, they can do things. Well, I mean, she’s not going to-- Clint: She’s sleeping right now, Kevin. (Awkward silence) Anybody hungry? What do you say we all go down to the cafeteria? Kevin: I already ate. Clint: (To Viki) What about you, honey? Viki: I’d really rather stay close by-- Clint: Are you sure? You haven’t had anything since this morning. Viki: I promise you, I’ll get something to eat later on, OK? You go on. (Clint leaves.) Kevin: Megan was doing so well. Viki: Yeah, she was. Kevin: Well, what happened? Viki: Her body rejected the kidney. It was a fluke. It was just bad luck. Horrible, horrible, bad luck. Kevin: Well, they’ll make her better. I mean, with all the things they know now, I have faith. Viki: (Trying not to cry) So do I. They will. It’s just, now it’s so hard... --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL; SUN ROOM (Sarah, Bo) Sarah: I can see why Megan likes this room so much. It’s got a great view. Bo: Sarah. Sarah: You know, she spends almost her whole day in here, did you know that? Just reading, or talking to other patients. She doesn’t like being in her own room too much. I mean, you know Megan, she feels like she’s missing out on all the fun. Bo: Sarah, just listen to me for a second, OK? I think you should go see Megan now. Sarah: Oh, please. Bo: Come on, you can handle it. Sarah: (Sarcastic) Oh, yeah. I can handle anything. We know that. Bo: Yes, you can. Sarah: Not anymore. Bo: You haven’t changed all that much. All you have to do is-- Sarah: Is what? Pretend I’m the old Sarah, just strong and fiesty-- Bo: No, you don’t have to pretend anything. There’s no such thing as the old Sarah, you and the person you were before. You’re the same person. (Laughs) God, this really is starting to sound stupid. Sarah: (Laughs) I know what you’re trying to say, Bo. Bo: Was Dr. Jonas able to help you with all of this? Sarah: You know, you always ask about him. Bo: Yeah, but I’m concerned. I just want to make sure that he’s doing-- Sarah: Bo, please don’t worry about me. I’m going to pull myself together. Bo: I know. I know you will. Listen, why don’t I take you right to-- Come with me to see Megan. That way it might be easier. Sarah: What I think I really need to do right now is just have a few minutes alone, if that’s OK. Just to get my focus back. Bo: Sure. (Bo leaves and Sarah pops a pill.) --- MOUNTAINVIEW CLINIC (Alex, Hank) Alex: I just knew that, given a chance, that you could be a reasonable man. Hank: And you gave me that chance. I am deeply grateful. Alex: I won’t miss this place at all. And playing disturbed on purpose is extremely exhausting. Hank: Yes, well, we’ll just wait and see what the psychiatric board has to say. Alex: Well, I’m sure they’ll say it’s time for me to get on with my life. (Laughs) Hank: Well, in that case, I’ll just see to that when I get back to my office. Alex: Oh, good. Hank: I’ll write up an official report next week. And with any luck, Statesville should have a cell waiting for you to start real soon. Alex: (Laughs maniacally) A cell? No, no, no, no, no! Hank: Listen, I’ll even try to get you one with a view. Taking into consideration how long your sentence should be. Alex: I have been acquitted for those little accidents that involved Fred Porter and that officer in Virginia. Not guilty by reason of insanity. Hank: Yes. Which you claimed you faked. Alex: But I cannot be retried for that. You do remember the double jeopardy rule, don’t you? Hank: Mm-hmm. But there’s still that charge of attempted murder, you remember that? Trying to drown Cassie Callison? Alex: Oh, that! Well, Mr. Gannon, when you realize the information that I have to offer you, I guarantee you, you will change your mind about Statesville. Besides, do I look like I belong in a dreadfully tacky, deadly dull place? Hmm? --- BREAK --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL (Kevin, Viki) Viki: Have you heard anything more about LeeAnn? Is she still in New York? Kevin: Do you care? Viki: Do you really blame me for her leaving town? Kevin: Well, who am I supposed to blame? LeeAnn is a wonderful girl. Why is it so hard for you to accept her? Viki: Oh, it’s not a question of acceptance, Kevin. Kevin: You know, this is a lousy topic of discussion. Probably the last thing that we should be talking about right now. I’m sorry I brought it up. Viki: You didn’t. I did. Kevin: You know, we really shouldn’t be fighting right now, Mom. We should be thinking about Megan. Viki: Darling, whenever I find that I am in pain, I think the best thing to do is to do something about it. Don’t just sit on it, do something. Kevin: The one thing I don’t need right now is your advice. Viki: Honey, if it is that important for you to find LeeAnn, then go. Find her. Kevin: Man, talk about sending out mixed messages. You’re the one that didn’t want us to get married, and now you’re telling me that-- Viki: No, I gave you advice about marriage. Now, I am telling you, if you are that concerned about where she is, go and find her. Do something. Kevin: You know, if I am lucky enough to track her down, you know what will happen. Viki: Find her first, then we’ll talk. Honey, do me a favor, please. Go find your father, will you? He’s putting up a very brave front about this, but he’s really taking it very badly. Would you please try and cheer him up? Kevin: Sure. Viki: Thank you. (Kevin leaves. Viki collapses into a seat.) --- LLANVIEW HOSPITAL; SUN ROOM (Asa, Bo, Clint) Bo: OK, OK, the crowd is hushed as he steps up to the line. Asa: Not a chance, Bo. Bo: (throwing paper ball into basket) He drills the first one, and the score is tied. Asa: Pure luck. Bo: Now you can hear a pin drop while he sets for the second one, and he arcs it right in, and-- Yes! The crowd cheers the new champion! Hey, Kev! You want to be champion? (Kevin enters) Clint: (Laughing) Chump, maybe! Not champion! Bo: Kev? Kevin: Megan is lying in there, they’re not even sure if she’s going to live, and you guys are playing basketball? I don’t believe you people! Asa: Why not, Kevin? Bo: What do you think we should be doing, Kev? Kevin: Well, not this! Anything in the world, but not this! Clint: We tried just about everything but this, Kevin. Asa: Moped around, son. Bo: We’ve yelled at each other, we’ve cussed each other. Asa: We did an awful lot of that, Kevin. Clint: We’ve been blowing off steam. Bo: Yeah, and if you don’t do that-- Clint: You explode. What we’re doing is just revving our engines, you know? We’re building up energy, in case we’re needed. Bo: You know, two on two is a better game. Clint: Yeah. Asa: You got it. I’ll tell you what. Kevin, you’re my point guard. I take Bo. You take your Pa here. Clint: Ha, ha! Big deal! Ain’t gonna happen! Kevin: Oh, all right, wait just a minute. Not only am I one of the best point guards this side of Isaiah Thomas-- Asa: You tell ‘em, Kevin! Kevin: But I’m also gonna get in your face like Charles Buckley. Clint: Talk is cheap, talk is cheap. Bo: Yeah, come on Isaiah-slash-Charles, you got the ball out. Let’s go. Kevin: You guys ready? (Kevin passes the paper ball to Asa, who shoots and scores. Enter Viki and Sarah.) Asa: Two! Two big ones! Viki: I’m sorry, don’t let us interrupt. Bo: (To Sarah) Did you go see Megan? Sarah: I couldn’t. I wanted to go in, but I couldn’t. Bo: OK, maybe tomorrow. Sarah: OK. Bo: Come back first thing in the morning. Look, what don’t I take you home. Sarah: Now? Viki: That’s a good idea, Bo. And you’ll come back in the morning, and Megan will be doing so much better. Bo: Viki’s right. Come on. (Bo and Sarah leave.) Asa: Viki? Why don’t you take your own advice? Viki: About what? Asa: Go home. Come back tomorrow. Viki: No, I can’t. I have to stay. Asa: (Sadly) I figured. But I just had to say it. --- BLAIR’S APARTMENT (Addie, Max, Blair) Addie: (arranging flowers) Pretty. Max: Flowers do brighten things up, don’t they? Blair: What are you saying? That this room is dark? Max: I got a great idea. What don’t we all go to the park? Addie: (Excited) All of us? Max: Yeah, all three of us. Addie: Me too? Max: Yes, you too. Blair: No. Max: Why not? Blair: It’s impossible Max: The park’s only two blocks from here. Blair: Max, it’s dark out. Max: There are lights on the south walk. The fountain’s just two blocks from here. Addie: I like fountains. They’re pretty. Max: Great! Blair: Forget it. Max: Why? Blair: This is very cruel of you, Max. Max: Cruel? Blair: Talking about going to the park in front of my mother. Max: It’d be good for her to get out. Being isolated from the world is not going to help her. Blair: She is my mother, and I know what is best for her. Max: And she is too lovely a lady to be locked up. Blair: Stay out of it, Max, do you hear me? Max: Oh, I hear you, but I don’t understand-- Blair: It’s time you were going to bed, Mama. Max: Are you kidding? Blair: Come on. Max: It’s not even seven o’clock. Blair: Say good night to Max, OK? Addie: (Shyly) Thank you for the flowers. Max: My pleasure. And the next time I come we will go pick them ourselves, just you and me. Addie: Good night. Max: Good night. Addie: (To Blair) I like Max. You like him too, don’t you, Blair? --- BREAK --- RODI’S BAR (Dorian, Jason, Luna, Wanda) Wanda: (Fighting with Dorian) I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you! Jason: Knock it off! Knock it off! Aunt Wanda, you stay there, OK, don’t move, OK? (To Dorian) And you do not say another word, do you hear me? Dorian: Me? What did I say? Jason: Shut up! Wanda: That’s telling her! Jason: (To Wanda) And you, too. Just shut up. Wanda: Fresh! Where did you get such a mouth? Jason: I am not going to put up with this for one more minute, have you got that? Wanda: Fine! (Taking Jason by the arm) Then let’s get out of here. Jason: (Shrugging Wanda off) Don’t treat me like a kid, dammit! I will get out of here when I feel like it. And I’m not going to hold your hand when I do. Wanda: (Trying hard not to cry) OK, Mr. Big Shot. You just remember this. You just remember this, when you need somebody to talk to, when you need some kind of family or something-- I’ll be there. Because I love you, no matter what. Luna: (To Wanda) Come on, honey, let’s go outside. Wanda: (Sneering at Dorian) Yeah. (Luna and Wanda leave) Dorian: Jason, I’m sorry she had to find out. Jason: Bound to happen sooner or later. Dorian: Yeah, but I’m sorry it happened this way. See, now everyone’s going to know. Jason: Do you care? Dorian: Me? Oh, aboslutely not. I’m thrilled! Jason: Why? Dorian: Oh, Jason. I mean, with all the women in Llanview who were jealous of me before-- Just think how jealous they’re going to be now. (Jason smiles) --- SARAH’S HOUSE (Sarah, Bo) Sarah: I should have gone in to see her. Going in would have been the brave thing to do, you said so yourself Bo: Now don’t beat yourself up about it. You’ll see Megan tomorrow, when you feeling more up to it. (Picks up empty pill bottles) Sarah: They’re my tranquilizers. They’re empty. Bo: I can see that. Sarah: I had an accident. Bo: What kind? Sarah: (Flustered) I knocked them into the sink. They were right by the edge of the sink, and it was dark, and I just knocked them, and they fell-- Bo: Sarah, this is not the third degree. Sarah: Well, no, you were looking kind of funny. Bo: What? Sarah: Well, I wouldn’t want you to think that I-- Bo: The only thing that I think right now is that you’re tired and you should lie down. So, will you do that? Sarah: Is that what you want me to do? Bo: Yeah. Come on, just put your feet up here. Lie down. (Covers Sarah with a blanket) And now, sleep. Sarah: Bo? I can’t just sleep. I have to fall asleep. Bo: (Smiling) Then fall. (Sarah closes her eyes.) --- MOUNTAINVIEW CLINIC (Alex, Hank) Alex: OK, here’s the deal, Gannon. I need you to guarantee me a full pardon and immunity for prosecution. Hank: Uh-huh. And what do I get? Alex: Think about what you wanted for Christmas this year, and you didn’t get it. Something that you wanted very badly. Hank: What? Alex: Well, it’s not a tie, and it’s not a new pair of sandals. What do you think about this? A big time crime boss. Carlo Hesser, all wrapped up in a little bow. Hmmm? --- BREAK --- BLAIR’S APARTMENT (Blair, Max) Blair: You are not to say anything about this. Max: What? Blair: You heard me. Max: I’m not to say-- Blair: Nobody is to know about my mother. Promise me that you won’t tell anybody? Max: Any particular reason? Blair: Because I’m asking it. Max: That’s not a reason. Blair: Well, it’s all I’m going to give you. Do I have your word that you won’t tell anybody? Max: Blair, she’s your mother. Blair: I know, I know what I’m doing. Max: She’s a very sweet lady. She’s very nice. Blair: You don’t know what you’re talking about. Max: I know what I saw. Blair: Forget what you saw. Max: You can’t keep her locked up forever. And one day I’m going to come calling and I’m going to take the three of us out, even if it’s just to the park. Blair: Why won’t you take my word for it? Max: For what? Blair: Max, you don’t know know everything about me. And you certainly don’t know anything about my mother. --- SARAH’S HOUSE (Sarah, Bo) (Bo is on his way out the door) Sarah: Bo? Bo: Sorry, I thought you were sound asleep. Sarah: No. Just kind of drifting. I guess you have to get going. Bo: Well, I don’t have to. If you need me here-- Sarah: Well, do you think maybe you could stay a little while? Would that be OK, do you think? Please? Really, I’d rather not be alone tonight. Bo: Sure. --- MEGAN’S ROOM (Megan, Viki, Larry) Larry: Viki, can I talk to you outside for a minute? Viki: Yeah. (In hallway) Viki: All right. Tell me the truth. Larry: Well, finding another donor is turning out to be a lot more difficult than we thought. Viki: Oh. Well, you’ll find someone. Larry: Well, Viki, see, there’s a long waiting list of names before Megan’s. She is not a prime candidate, because of her condition. We still have to deal with the strain of her immune system, and that’s getting weaker. And I’m just afraid that-- Viki: You’re afraid what? Larry: I think when she wakes up, you’re going to have to talk to her about ... putting her affairs in order. (Viki losing control) Viki: You are not giving up on her! Larry: I’m not, no. I’m just trying to be practical. (Nurse enters) Nurse: Dr. Wolek? Larry: What? (To Viki) I’ll be right back. (Nurse and Larry exit. Viki, breaking down into tears, goes to the pay phone and dials Andrew’s number.) Viki: Hello, I’m looking for the Reverend Andrew Carpenter. Yes, I know he’s on a retreat. Look, I’m sorry, this is an emergency. I really need to talk to him. Thank you. (To herself) No! She is not going to die! No! --- END ---
