One of the greatest things the French ever did was to introduce the word "auteur" in regard to movies. An auteur is a figure, almost always a director, who puts his own personal imprint on the movies he is involved with. All the great directors have been called auteurs at one time or another.

Besides just movie reviews, I plan on writing profiles on some of my favorite auteurs on this page. Not just directors, though: writers, stars, composers, and cinematographers all deserve recognition. I will watch most of the filmography for each figure I profile and then record my impressions of what makes that artist unique and worthy of study.

Dale's Film Profiles

  • Trent Harris: Harris is an independent filmmaker from Utah whose movies are unmistakably eccentric, local, and audacious.
  • Winsor McCay: If Walt Disney was the father of animation, then Winsor McCay was the grandfather.
