Victor De Leon (cool name) has the honor of being the first person to write an in-depth essay on who he thinks outta be in the Wishlist, the wonderful Gary Oldman. I would have done this essay myself earlier, but never got around to it, besides Victor says it much better than I ever could in his essay below.
Hello Mohammad,
I thought about your request for some suggestions for your actor wish list. I have one for now- Gary Oldman. I became immensely impressed with Oldman when I first saw him portray Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy. His intense and hypnotizing performance was so fresh at the time that I knew that he was in for one hell of a productive and challenging career as an actor. He went on to do Phil (Rattle and Hum) Janou's State of Grace with Sean Penn and succeeded in stealing every scene he was in as the boozing, short tempered hitman of Ed Harris's irish mob clan. He was extreme and visceral in that role with his sweat drenched long hair and his great irish accent. And when he would speak he would just spit and drool with such abandon that one might think he was really plastered! Then of course he went on do Coppola's Dracula in 1992. Say what you will about the movie (I personally love it) his performance was probably the centerpiece of the whole film. The movie did depend alot on fancy sets and costumes but Oldman performed right thru them. The bat make-up, the wolfen Dracula, old Drac, young Drac. Man, he did it all. He might not have been too scary but he was competent in portraying conflict. The conflict of his long gone humanity and his need for being and surviving as a creature dependent on the blood of the living. It was a cool interpretation. He immersed himself in the dialect and mannerisms of an aristocratic romanian count. That shows his dedication to his art. It would've been interesting to see Oldman as Valek in the upcoming Vampires if he had'nt played a vampire already.
Since then he has been a wee bit typecast as a baddie. Hence Airforce One, The Fifth Element and even Lost in Space. All he needs though is a kick ass role in a JC flick, awww hell even as a bad guy or as your typical JC anti-hero. I can see Oldman even as someone who would probably love to work with JC. JC is one of those few and rare directors that many actors would love to work with. Probably more than JC himself realizes. Oldman would make a cool addition to that list of Pleasence, Bridges, Neill, Woods and of course Russell.
Oh, Richard E. Grant was also in Coppola's Dracula, too. He played Dr. Seward. Once again playing a victorian type of role like you had stated. I did love Grant in Warlock. He was funny in LA Story, too! I really dig your choices like Reno and Tim Dalton! They are great choices. If I can think of any more I'll get back to you, dude!
Talk to you soon,
Victor De Leon
