---[ ROWAN ATKINSON ]---
This has GOT to be one of my most inspirational flashes, folks.
Definitely the most odd of all my choices for a starring role in a John
Carpenter film is the one and only Rowan Atkinson. I mean, just look at him. He's definitely odd, that's for sure. He's British, which is
cool. And he's world reknowned for his portrayal in the comedic television
series BLACK ADDER and MR. BEAN So, for the most part the world knows him
only as a comedian. I'm sure that he loves it, but like Robin Williams and
Jim Carrey if given the chance, I believe Rowan would make a kick ass
dramatic or even, hell, action actor! The reason I believe so is after
having watched many taped interviews of the man out of character, Rowan,
astonishingly enough, comes across as a very cool, suave and sophisticated
individual. The man is very smart and very sharp. His eyes lose the
characteristic stupidity of Mr. Bean and his voice takes on a cold
calculating sound hard to describe, it is very cool though mind you. His
face relaxes and he is very intersting to watch with his comedic guard down.
Rowan is definitely not the standard Hollywood type and would mesh well in a
JC film. Only it would pain me to see him reduced to some supporting
comedic role or something. Well, let me take that back. Put Rowan and my
other favorite British actor Timothy Dalton
together in some urban horror/comedy a la BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA and
then I could accept it. Otherwise, just give the man an opportunity to play
a straight laced action hero. I mean he's reasonably fit and does a lot of
very physical things in his tv shows and comedy specials. I know he could
pull it off. Hell, look at how people screamed when Tim Burton first cast
Michael Keaton as BATMAN. And Keaton was the best Batman to come down the
pipes in a long time. Filmmaking is about taking risks. JC is a risk taker
and there ain't nothing much riskier than having your main star being a
comedian trying to break into the scifi/horror/action gig, bub.
So do you think Rowan Atkinson is a good choice? Do you agree or disagree with me? Let me know what you think.
