Michelle Horn Interview

Kiara's Sahifa was recently granted the right to an exclusive interview with Michelle Horn, who provides the speaking voice for cub Kiara in "Simba's Pride." Questions came from the site maintainer and two frequent visitors. Here are her responses.

1. How did Disney contact you?

I had done an audition tape for another Disney project. My voice on that tape was overheard by the Simba's Pride people and I was asked to come in to read for Lion King II. I laughed and thought there must be some mistake, I didn't know anything about a sequel to The Lion King.

2. If you couldn't do Kiara, which Simba's Pride character would you like to do?

A: I'd like to do Zira. Evil characters are fun to do.

3. Which scene was your favorite to do?

A: Playing tag with Kovu after we were chased by the crocodiles.

4. Which scene did you have to do over and over again?

A: When I had to make the Rasberries sound, and when I had to scream.

5. If you could play one character in one of the animated Disney movies, which one would you choose?

A: Dot in "A Bug's Life."

6. Which movie do you like the best, "The Lion King" or "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride"?

A: They really aren't different movies, one is just an extension of the other, and they are all part of the same story. I loved them both, and was proud to be part of the circle of life.

7. Can you tell us about the process of recording? Do you do the voice first and then they animate the character or is it the other way around?

A: You do the voice first, and then it is animated. When recording the microphone picks up every sound, so you have to be careful! After the animation was done, I came back to do some additional recording to make the final version.

8. When they animated Kiara did they work any of your unique facial expressions into her?

A: Yes, and they used my suggestions for some of her lines.

9. How did it feel to see and hear your voice coming from Kiara?

A: It was really exciting. Voice over work is a lot more difficult than people might think, so when you get to see the finished product it is very rewarding.

10. Can you tell us a little about your new movie "The Ruby Princess Runs Away"?

A: Its about Princess Roxanne who feels she is too young to be a princess who runs away with her friend Twitter, and has many adventures, and makes lots of new friends including an animatronic dragon named Hapgood and a flying Gorax. It was filmed completely on location in Oregon with authentic period costumes. It is based on a successful series of childrens books by Janna N. Malcom and is scheduled to be released in the Spring.

11. What are your future ambitions, goals?

A: To be in a sucessful TV series (I just filmed a pilot), and to star in a movie with Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise or John Travolta.
