Dark Beast is an older-less moralistic version of Henry McCoy. Dark Beast is from an alternate timeline in which Apocalypse ruled the world and the X-Men were led by Magneto. Dark Beast was the chief scientist of Apocalypse and liked to toy with his vast knowledge in sick ways. When the Quicksilver of that world changed his transporter coordinates from his escape route into the heart of the M'Kraan Crystal during the final battle between the X-Men and the forces of Apocalypse.

McCoy ended up 20 years in our past, very confused and with little memory. He was then found by a young Emma Frost, who helped him regain his senses and helped him adapt to his surroundings, unaware of his past wrongdoing. Dark beast is responsible for the creation of the evil Morlocks, the Gene Nation.

McCoy has used his ingenious manipulation to construct a following of mutants to work for him including, Fatale, Random and Havok whom he brainwashed to work for him. Dark Beast also kidnapped this reality’s Beast, changed his body to match his which included turning his gray spiked fur blue among other slight changes and took his place in the X-men for a short time. However his charade was discovered by Onslaught and he was later put in federal jail. Havok then freed him and allowed McCoy to work under his newly formed Brotherhood. Little to Dark Beast's knowledge, Havok was secretly assembling the team so he could debunk Dark Beast's research, the whole time.

Later, Dark Beast helped to create the Psi-ops who were sent to kidnap X-Man so that he could be brainwashed to work for McCoy. McCoy fears Sinister for unexplained reasons and goes to great lengths to keep his existence a secret. Dark beast also has an unexplained connection to the New Son, the super-powerful alternate reality version of Gambit.

McCoy currently leads the Gene Nationals, and a short time ago got into a brawl with Generation X and X-Man, during which he used a robot called Wynter as a remote combatant.
