Maureen O'Hara has a lot to answer
for. There I was, a gawky little kid, watching Saturday morning cartoons
on TV & chain slurping bowls of Cherrios, when suddenly, the Matinee
Movie begins, & there's this ...girl on the screen. Pirate
Queen, Arabian Princess, Medieval Noblewoman, Tarzan's Mate (no
wait, that was the other Maureen J)
...she's gorgeous, & full of fire, & running around
in a skimpy &/or bosom heaving costume, & even in B&W you could
tell her hair was a rich, dark, red, &...
Oh, look! The bad guy's tying her up! ...& boy
is she mad! Look at her fight! Wow! (Next
thing I know, I'm a middle aged, balding, couch potato fixated on redheaded
DiDs. Thanks Maureen. J) |

Anyhoo... Here she is as Mary
(her
third screen role, at the ripe young age of 19) in the clutches
of mad Sir Humphrey (Charles Laughton) in Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn.
I gotta tell ya, even without the DiD scene, this is a great movie,
especially if you love costume melodramas the way I do. There are
all
sorts of great scenes scattered throughout, like brave, defiant, (scared)
little Mary confronting an entire angry crowd of murderous criminals
out on the moors, &... Well, just rent—better yet BUY the video.
You'll see what I mean. |
