The Cruise Factor
Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell sat down with Tom Cruise
to speak to him about Minority Report, the futuristic thriller that pairs
the Hollywood top gun with Oscar®-winning director Steven Spielberg.
It's a first-time pairing for these two mega men, but it was a pairing with one
well-known international man of mystery that had Tom talking ...
Nancy: Are you going to share some of your mojo with Austin Powers?
Tom: Yes, he can have some of my mojo.
Nancy: What are you going to be doing in Austin Powers in Goldmember?
Tom: Oh, you've got to see it.
Nancy: Not going to reveal anything?
Tom: Not going to reveal ... I'm sworn to secrecy.
What isn't a secret is the love Tom has for his girlfriend of over a year, Penelope
Cruz. Tom professes his love in the July issue of Premiere Magazine.
Nancy: You actually said you love her.
Tom: Yes, I wouldn't want to be with her if I didn't.
Nancy: Is this the first time you came out and said you love her? You
know I’m going to ask you these questions. (laughs)
Tom: (laughs) You know what? I don't know if it's the first time, but she's
just a terrific lady – a terrific lady.
Tom is focused on his new movie Minority Report, which hits theaters June
21, but it's his next project he can't wait for: the next trip to the
orthodontist!
Nancy: When are the braces coming off?
Tom: Before I start shooting The Last Samurai these braces come
off.
Nancy: You'll be glad...
Tom: Yes, I can't wait.
Nancy: As you're getting ready to turn 40 – here you are with braces.
Tom: Yes, here I am with braces.
Nancy: So you're not perfect after all. (laughs)
Tom: (laughs) No, I'm not perfect.
Tom opens up to Nancy about Minority Report, Steven Spielberg, and his
children.
Nancy: I understand you actually sent Spielberg the script on Minority
Report...
Tom: Yeah, I read it when I was doing Eyes Wide Shut. He is an
amazing guy. He's actually real humble, you know. He says, 'Look, I do things
that I develop and I am also a director for hire.' I wanted to work with him. I
mean, who doesn't want to work with Steven Spielberg. I sent it to him when I
was making Eyes Wide Shut. He immediately said he dug it and said let's
go.
Nancy: I'm curious though, when you two are together, who has the last
say? You both have so much power in Hollywood and you both are very good at
controlling your career. I mean that as a compliment, of course.
Tom: It's funny because I don't think about that. I'm an actor working on
the set. He's a director, so if he wants me to do something, I do the best I can
and I try to contribute to his vision in the film.
Nancy: This movie is different. I mean it's kind of dark. Vanilla Sky
had a little darkness to it as well – it's not what you are saying would
be the obvious choice for a film for you. Are you doing more projects that are
not the obvious choices on purpose?
Tom: I've always tried to do different things – always. I mean if you
look back, I started out in the films Top Gun, Color of Money, Born
on the Fourth of July, Rain Man – they are all different
kinds of films.... But we're all looking for something challenging and something
different. I think a film like this for Steven is very different for him and
very challenging. That is what you look for. It's exciting.
Nancy: One of the things I've heard about you that I love is that it
doesn't matter what you are doing on set, if you get a phone call from one of
your children you'll stop everything. Is that true?
Tom: True – that's true.
Nancy: What happens? Do you get the phone call and your assistant is
standing by?
Tom: Yeah, they have all the numbers and they know how to get hold of me.
(laughs)
Nancy: You just say, 'Wait a minute, I'm in the middle of this stunt,
hanging upside down' and you take the phone call?
Tom: Yes, whatever it takes.
Nancy: Is it true the assistant is standing by and just holds the phone
up? (laughs)
Tom: It depends on the position I'm in. If I'm hanging upside down then I
need a little help. (laughs)
Nancy: There was a great Premiere Magazine article that came out
that I really enjoyed reading and we talked about this before. You said that
more than a few people were disappointed that you and Nicole [Kidman] have come
to such great terms and are such great friends now. Is that part of the whole
'some people want to take you down' thing?
Tom: You know it's not everybody. It certainly isn't everybody. There is
that element out there, to say that it's not there is to be foolish and naïve,
but I'm not a person who focuses on those people. I don't give them a lot of
attention, only when they get in my face and then I have to deal with it. But
certainly there are those elements. My life isn't one lived worrying about those
kind of things. I've got a great life. I get to do something I love and I enjoy,
too. Everyone is healthy and everyone is doing well.
