Most of Pecker’s irresistible charm comes from the fact that every character in the film is written so well that it’s easy to understand their deep complexities and amusing quirks from the moment many of them appear onscreen. This feel-good laugh out loud film comes from director/writer John Waters, and he’s finally found a middle ground between such wholesome fare as Hairspray and his more shocking work, like Pink Flamingoes. Waters’ movie stays as wholesome as apple pie while including such scenes as two rats making love and the close-up of a woman’s pubic area! Although Pecker is mainly a humorous satire of the Art world, its heart comes from its characters and message. The message is that there are many different types of people in the world and that all of them will exhibit their best qualities if given a chance to shine. Another message about the corrupting nature of fame also comes off strongly. A nod must go to Edward Furlong and Brendan Sexton III for giving the fun Waters-esque performances I was hoping for. Pecker’s music is as good as the actual movie itself, something I expect from John Waters’ movies.
