The showed started September 22, 1994 at Central Perk, the now famous coffe house  Monica Gellar, Chandler Bing, Phoebe Buffay and Joey Tribbiani were sipping on their coffee and talking about life. Later Ross Gellar and Rachel Green are introduced.     Monica and Ross are siblings (Ross a few years older). Chandler was Ross' roommate from high school and now lives across the hall from Monica. Joey is Chandler's roommate. Pheobe was Monica's roommate before she moved out to live with her grandmother. Rachel was Monica's close friend back in high school. They now share an apartment. Ross has had a crush on Rachel since high school.

An NBC press release described FRIENDS in this way:
   "At the center of the group is Monica, an intelligent neat freak, who works as an assistant chef and has a knack for meeting the wrong men. Monica's spoiled high school friend and new roommate, Rachel, is embarking on a life of independence after leaving her fiance, Barry, at the altar and cutting up all  her credit cards. Monica's older brother, Ross, was thrown into bachelorhood when his wife left him. A hopeless romantic, he misses married life and fears there may only be one woman in the world for him. Across the hall from Monica and Rachel live Chandler and Joey. Chandler is a humorous, if somewhat negative, observer of life. He is romantically detached and professionally unmotivated. Joey, a struggling actor, is more enthusiastic about life. Rounding out this circle of friends is Monica's former roommate, Pheobe, who is a little off the wall but always cheerful."

   Now that you know all of that you're probably wondering how did this group all get together. You already know that Ross and Monica are siblings. When Monica finished chef school, she move to New York CIty. That is when Ross put her in touch with Chandler who told her about his apartment building. Phoebe and Monica hooked up through a roommate-matching service, until Phoebe left to help out with her granny. That then left a vacancy for Rachel to fill. Chandler needed a roomie when his friend Kip was married and moved out. Chandler then searched for a roommate. His first choice was scared off by Mr. Heckles, so he was stuck with Joey.
