The Three Witches:

Cassandra, Sabrina and Tabitha show up in several of the storylines. They first appeared in MacDavis and have been too much fun to get rid of. When I first started writing the plot for MacDavis I hadn't decided who the three sisters should be named for. After canvassing Cam, he supplied me with the following helpful advice:

  From mayor Tue Sep 13 00:10:13 1994
From: mayor (Cam "You didn't see me!" Mayor)
  >
  > The scenes do get longer, I was tempted to use ex-girlfriends as the
  > witches. Who would you have cast as the Witches? Just a
  > brief explanation, no essays please.

  1) The Blonde-haired Sylvia (not the dark-haired one). I went out with
her for a little while. After i wised up and dropped her, my friend ran
into her and she said she was working on a love potion and casting spells
to get me back. You might remember her, jeff. She went out with Don
     Freiling (sp?) around 1987.

  2) A mean telephone operator. (You'd have to work her scene over the phone)

  3) Customer Service People. (the nice word for "Complaints" department)

  4) Mrs. Bell, my kindergarten teacher. She spanked me on the first day of
     school (of my entire life).

  5) The Romper Room lady (as some kind of anti-hero)

Incidentally, while Sabrina and Tabitha are based on fictional characters Cassandra is based on a person I met through the letter column of a comic book. She's not really a witch, just witchy.

I'm reminded of the Bugs Bunny cartoon:

"Yeah, I know, but aren't they ALL witches inside?"

Winston Salem:

Winston Salem is everyone and everyone is Winston Salem. Does that sound like something you were taught in high school english class? Origianlly Winston Salem was brought out for the sole purpose of being killed off. He was intended to be Winston Smith from 1984 and when he died he was offered a last cigarette, end of joke. Or so I thought.

It turned out that Winston had a bit more staying power than I imagined. He had apparently been created from the Kurt Vonnegut section of my mind and had absorbed Kilgore Trout's personality and Billy Pilgrim's time indifference. Winston tends to show up in storylines whether he wants to or not. If anything bad happens it will happen to Winston, he tends to represent the feelings that you get when fate points its finger randomly at you. I suppose he's not that much different from Charlie Brown, with the exception of course that he changes his shirt from time to time. Winston really doesn't have any control over his own life and I suppose everyone feels that way now and then.

Incidentally, Winston and Cassandra are currently starring in "The Banner Years" . You can mail winston at winston_salem@oocities.com You can view the history of the Follies , or read some of the storylines .
