***DEAN CAIN ON ABC ONLINE -- May 9, 1996***
ABC Amy: Good evening everyone. We're thrilled to be talking with Dean
Cain tonight. At the end of our Q&A with Dean, we'll be running a trivia
contest in which one lucky audience member will win a complete set of L&C
trading cards.
Before we get started with the questions, I'd like to make a few
announcements. First of all, I'd like to apologize that the Picture of
the Week has not appeared yet. I'm working on a special feature that
highlights the season finale, and it's taking a little longer than usual.
Speaking of the season finale, unless you've been hiding under a piece of
Kryptonite, you probably already know that L&C's season finale airs THIS
Sunday, May 12 at 8 p.m., ET. Don't miss it! Those of you who want to
come chat about the season finale on Sunday night should check out our Lois
and Clark chat room. Use keyword L&C to get there.
That's it for the announcements. And now for the main event! Our guest
tonight doesn't need much introduction. You all know Dean Cain as S
uperman/Clark Kent on ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
Dean's here tonight to take your questions about the show and anything else
you'd like to ask. Welcome Dean!
DCain Live: Thanks! It's great to be here! Hello everyone!
ABC Amy: Thanks for coming! Let's get started with the questions. Our
first question comes from across the Atlantic. HeidSFost asks:
Question: Hi there Dean from cold England! All us BritFolcs want to know
when you are coming to see us..please give us good news ...
DCain Live: I'm actually planning a trip to Europe at the end of May, so
it may very well include a trip through England! I'd have to stop in and
see my good friend Andi Peters.
ABC Amy: The next question is from Perkie926:
Question: Will we be seeing you in any movies during the summer?
DCain Live: I'm glad you asked...! This summer I will shoot my very first
feature film since I started L&C. There's even a good chance that I will
shoot TWO films this summer! The films wouldn't be released until next
year, though.
ABC Amy: VARTOX asks:
Question: Dean, does the network have as influence over a storyline as has
been reported? If so, is it always as negative an influence as some may
feel?
DCain Live: Making a televison show is a collaboration. There are so many
voices to be heard, that sometimes, a decision has to be made. The Network
has a lot of influence, of course, but they work with our show's producers
and Warner Brothers, and all the writers, and the actors, etc... So, yes,
the network has influence, but we come up with the storylines together, and
their input is certainly not always negative! I wasn't paid to say that
either!
ABC Amy: We're talking with Superman Dean Cain! Use the interact button to
send your questions to Dean now!
ABC Amy: Our next question comes from Lucy Lane.
Question: I enjoyed meeting you in San Jose (end of Aug.), thanks for the
autographed t-shirt. You were right, this season is the best out of all of
them. Here's my question. By the way, love your new 'do! Are you planning
to write anymore episodes? -Jennifer
DCain Live: Yes, Jennifer, I will probably write at least one episode each
year. I love the process of writing, and I love the show, so I enjoy being
involved in creating it from the ground up. I have no idea what kind of
show I'll write, but I can say this...Next year will be even better than
this year, without a doubt. And thanks for the hair comment! I'm not
completely at ease with my new lid!
ABC Amy: What kind of slang is that? ; ) FYI: The episode that Dean
wrote for this season, "Virtually Destroyed" will be repeating on Sunday,
June 9, for those of you who missed it.
ABC Amy: The next question comes from our pal RAMROCH:
Question: Hi Dean!! We've heard that L&C was originally conceived as a sort
of "Superman Meets Moonlighting" for a later timeslot. Has it been at all
frustrating for you to be in the Sunday family hour instead?
DCain Live: Man, Amy can really type!
ABC Amy: I took lessons ; )
DCain Live: I am not the least bit frustrated by our family timeslot. I
love the fact that entire families sit and watch our show together! I don't
think Superman is really set up to be a 10pm type of show in any
incarnation. I think that would be a mistake. I like to think that our
show reaches the broadest of all possible audiences!
ABC Amy: The next one is from IsThatSHi:
Question: {{{{{{Dean}}}}}... Hi!!!! =}!! There have been several rumors
(and I DO hope they are just that.. rumors) that either you or Teri may be
leaving the show?!? Is this at all true & if so, how many more seasons do
we have to look forward to before Doomsday?
DCain Live: Thanks for the hugs! (I had to ask what they were!)
ABC Amy: LOL : )
DCain Live: I know that I am not going anywhere next season, and to my
knowledge, neither is Teri. It's funny...someone decides to write a story
and just plain makes up things like I'm leaving the show, or I want $450k
per week (although that would be nice!). It's just ridiculous. You have
to be careful with what you read, because it's not always true! I think
we'll be on for at least two more seasons...but don't quote me!
ABC Amy: I don't think you've gone on the record yet (at least not online)
on this next one, so we have to ask....
DCain Live: Uh-oh
ABC Amy: It's not bad at all, just a tradition for L&C auditoriums : )
ABC Amy: DC2936 asks:
Question: First I want to say I saw you on Letterman last night and I love
the hair. Now my question is If you could chose from any of Superman's
powers to have for yourself which one would it be and why?
DCain Live: Ahhhhh....yes....the old superpowers question. Well I've
answered this before, and I think this is what I said: I would choose
flying, because right now, I hate to fly. It scares the %#@& out of me.
I just get a little nervous. It would be great to fly...no more airlines,
etc... just think of all the $$$ I could save! Also, I don't think I would
have the discipline to not use my x-ray vision...you know what I mean?
ABC Amy: DSimons asks:
Question: Dean: You've had to stay in good shape for sports and acting.
Have you thought about making an exercise video?
ABC Amy: Move over Richard Simmons!
DCain Live: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
DCain Live: No.
ABC Amy: KSteele00 asks:
Question: On L&C the romance scenes seem real. How do you disconnect your
feelings when you are acting the sexy stuff?
DCain Live: I don't. I'm completely in love with my co-star.
DCain Live: Okay, just kidding.
ABC Amy: And now, for the real answer...
DCain Live: When you're an actor, you have to make emotions available. You
have to let people see you be vulnerable, and you have to be vulnerable to
them. It's in the work. And it is work. We're used to working together,
and I think we have a healthy respect for one another, and it comes across
in our work. Also, if you add in the fact that we're doing these things in
front of about 50 people under the lights, etc... you know that it isn't all
real, even if you get lost in the moment for a beat.
ABC Amy: And now a question from one of your bovine fans. ImACow78 asks:
Question: DEAN- Do you find it hard to live a normal life when you are
admired by so many people?
DCain Live: I think it's hard to describe any life as "normal." Being
recognized as a TV personality has its plusses and minuses. It's strange
to have people pass by you on the street, and yell, "Hey, it's superman!"
But it's great when you want to eat dinner, and you get a table!
ABC Amy: As opposed to sitting on the floor ; )
DCain Live: yep
ABC Amy: PACAED asks:
Question: I was wondering if Dean had a "dream role"--something (other than
Superman) he'd love to play.
DCain Live: There are tons of different roles I'd like to play. .. I'm not
sure any "one" role qualifies as my "dream" role, but there are quite a few
actors who have had careers that I admire. Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, just
to name two.
ABC Amy: Karet 24 asks:
Question: Dean~ The fan reaction to the wedding arc was primaraly
negative. Did yo expect this? Were you disappointed? What are your
expectations for this current arc? ~Rachel
DCain Live: I thought the wedding arc was too drawn out. I think we all
agree on that one! I'm glad it's over! As for the current arc...I know
what happens, and I can say this: keep watching, because the pace will pick
up!
ABC Amy: DHVanderv asks:
Question: Submitted by a USA FoLC for a Aussie friend: In the episode you
wrote "Virtually Destroyed" (which aired in Australia 2 weeks ago), did you
have much say in the way the episode was directed? All the best, Lara in
Sydney Australia.
DCain Live: Actually, I had a lot of say in the way the show was directed.
The director was wonderful in that way.
ABC Amy: FzzBzz asks:
Question: What are you doing for your mom for Mother's Day?
DCain Live: My family is very tightly-knit. We always have a small family
dinner, and just baby my mom. I do the dishes, she doesn't have to do
anything.
ABC Amy: Bunnie asks:
Question: Dean.....will you be on any upcoming MTV Rock-n-Jock sports
specials?
DCain Live: If I am available, I think I will always play in the basketball
Rock-n-Jock game. It's too much fun. When I began acting on L&C, the one
thing I wanted more than anything else was to play in those games!
ABC Amy: We're talking with actor Dean Cain! Use the interact button to
send your questions to Dean now.
ABC Amy: MACKINZI asks:
Question: Do you have any advice for people who want to write/ direct for
a television show?
DCain Live: That's a tough one. There is so much competition for those
jobs, it's incredible. My best advice is: keep on working. If you write,
write. Hollywood is the best city for meeting people in the television
world, but if your story is good, chances are, you can sell it, no matter
where you live! Good luck!
ABC Amy: Chalkgard asks:
Question: What has been the best thing about acting on the show besides
being paid steadily for three years?
DCain Live: I have learned more in the last three years than I can even
explain. I grew up around this business, but working in it is another
world! Probably the best thing is that I get the chance to meet some of
the people that I admire so much in this world. It creates a staggering
number of opportunities!
ABC Amy: Rob1300r asks:
Question: Dean - Will the FOLC's enjoy the season finale?
DCain Live: I think they will enjoy it very much. Even though it is a
cliffhanger of sorts, the bond between Lois and Clark is much stronger than
ever before. I enjoyed shooting it more than any other episode of the
season (except of course, Virtually Destroyed)
ABC Amy: DEERHUN55 asks:
Question: Hey Mr. Cain. L&C is my absolute favorite show. I was wondering,
if it were up to you, would you like to see Lois and Clark FINALLY get
married? Why or Why not?
DCain Live: I would LOVE to see Lois and Clark get married, move in
together, buy a house, have a kid, all that! We'll see!
ABC Amy: Here's one that I skipped over, so I'll type it myself. This
person asks: I know that you have written a couple of shows, so already
you are able to move the show in one direction or another, but is there
some overall change you would like to see?
DCain Live: Well, like I said before...I want them together!
ABC Amy: FYI: That question was sent in by K Callan, who's sitting in our
audience tonight...anonymously.
DCain Live: Hi, mom! I think I would like to see more of my parents in the
show...they're really great actors!
ABC Amy: We all agree with that! Liz83 asks:
Question: I'm 13 and am a "super" Superman fan. I like to read and I like
country music. What are your favorite authors and what type of music do you
like? P.S- I loved you on the Letterman show last night!
DCain Live: Thanks! I like all different types of music. It depends on
what kind of mood I'm in, or want to get in. I like hard rap when I play
sports, piano music when I'm writing, easy listening when I'm cleaning my
house, etc... As for authors, I haven't been able to read a book in
months, I'v been so busy! All I get a chance to read these days is
scripts!
ABC Amy: Kistiputi asks:
Question: What is it like being compared to Superman all the time and
living up to the part in Superman history?
DCain Live: Being compared to Superman is tough...it's a lot to live up to
in real life, so I don't even try! I do feel a certain responsibility for
the younger viewers because I know that they look up to the character so
much, that I hope the way I've tried to live my life is a good example!
ABC Amy: Maly6809 asks: Do you ever watch yourself on TV on Sunday nights?
DCain Live: I watch the show on tape before it actually airs. If I haven't
had time to watch it first, I'll watch on Sunday. I love to see the show,
and I'm not hyper-critical of myself. I learn from watching what things
worked, what jokes, etc... and I learn what worked as far as camera moves,
etc... It's kind of what I used to do when I played football and study
films.
ABC Amy: We'll give Dean a tiny break and do tonight's trivia contest. The
first person to answer this question correctly will win a complete set of
Lois & Clark skybox trading cards. E-mail your answer to the AOL
screenname Talk2you. Here's the question...On Sunday, we're going to be
finding out a lotmore about Clark's Kryptonian past. But we already know
about his beginnings on earth. Tell us on what day and year, according to
Tempus Fugitive, Clark landed in Smallville? E-mail your answers to
Talk2You now!
ABC Amy: Dean has a special message for an FOLC...
DCain Live: I just want to take a moment to wish Lara-Elaine Koch a speedy
recovery.... :) Hang in there!!!
ABC Amy: Here's a question from LoisLnKent:
Question: Dean, your acting just gets better and better and better. Some
people are disappointed that Clark didn't cry throughout the "arc." How do
you feel about that, and will we ever see Clark cry? Sue
DCain Live: I have to be honest here...I didn't know that was true. I take
each scene, or episode, etc... and I do my best to interpret them. If Clark
hasn't cried, it's because I didn't think he should. "Crying" doesn't mean
you're really sad...being really sad means you're really sad. Maybe I'll
cry on Sunday, who knows!!! :(
ABC Amy: Seems like a whole lot of you knew tonight's trivia question...but
the prize goes to the fastest draw in the room. The winner is CookieLnC!
Congratulations Cookie! The answer was, May 17, 1966. That's when Clark's
spaceship landed in Smallville.
DCain Live: Way to go Cookie! I didn't even know that! I was close,
though...
ABC Amy: You shouldn't admit that!
DCain Live: I would've figured it out!
ABC Amy: Yes, but you wouldn't have won the cards!
ABC Amy: We'll take one final question for Dean before we say goodnight.
ABC Amy: Metrogirl asks:
Question: Dean, are those tights comfortable???
DCain Live: Well, in a word... Nope! :) They're very...tight!
ABC Amy: LOL
ABC Amy: Our time has flown by. A million thanks to Dean for joining us
tonight! We're all looking forward to the L&C season finale this Sunday!
DCain Live: Thank you everyone for coming out! Your support makes it all
worthwhile for us! Thanks!
ABC Amy: Those of you who would like to keep talking about L&C should hop
on over to our L&C chat room. Use keyword L&C to get there. Thanks for
joining us tonight. We'll see you next time. Look for an announcement
about an auditorium with L&C's executive producers Brad Buckner and Eugenie
Ross-Leming very soon. I hope to see everyone in the L&C chat room on
Sunday after the show.
ABC Amy: Good night, and thanks again Dean!
DCain Live: Thank you! Bye
