"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Lost Cities - Part II"

"Living in Atlantis on 5 clams a day"

The story so far...

Cover to mini-series #2

Well, the evil Atlantean wizard, Gyphon, seems to be bent on taking out the werecheetahs, the Atlanteans, and pretty well anyone who stands in his way. And that would be our heroes. Roll call!

The explorer Gina Diggers and her lycanthropic sister Britanny. Stripe, prince of the Kryn race who built and inhabited the city-ship of El Dorado. Gina's arch-rival Penny Pincer. And finally, Ace, pilot-extraordinaire and good friend of all archaeologists.

And now, back to the show.

Everyone's meeting on Penny's sail-barge to prepare for the Atlantis trip, including the elven magic-users Mesha and Tark. Gina's converted her Ginamobile to become submersive, and travels with Mesha. The others travel in Ace's mini-sub.

Unfortunately, they run into some of Ace's ol' enemies. Dark Bird, the leader, orders the MIG-35s to go under the surface to attack Ace. But with a bit of blind luck and bad luck, they escape quite scathed. The two teams get separated though.

Gina and Mesha wake up being faced by Atlanteans, (including Gyphon's half-sister, Tyr), and after each learns of the other's intentions, they decide to help each other defeat Gyphon. The key is the Gem of Returning, which Gina acquired earlier. A spy is revealed at that point, followed by a small skirmish. Good guys win. The two girls are then led to the Pool of Legends to see how Ace's crew is doing.

Ace's crew is doing bad. We find the mini-sub under attack by a giant squid. Good guys win. Metallically wounded, they enter into the cave that Gina took earlier. But they find Gyphon waiting, and are soon captured.

Gina has since found her trashed car and converts the scrap into the Lazy-Boy from Hell, a chair with attitude. With Gina's team weaponed-up, they launch an assault through the Pool of Legends on Gyphon. Good guys win. Gyphon gets the last laugh when Gina accidentally lets loose a weapon of immense destruction. It teleports her elsewhere and cracks Altantis' dome. All get to safety.

In the final panels, we see Gina shivering in a cold and snowy place, dressed only in the thin veils she had been given for the humid Atlantis. She collapses into a nice warm sleep...

ProseWolf Says:

I liked this issue. Good banter between Gina and Penny, Brit and Stripe. A lot of plot was thrown in as well, but still Gyphon was kept a two-dimensional villain; he just wasn't developed thoroughly for this series.

All in all, a good effort, and a definite pick-up because of its earliness.

In-Jokes

Ginamobile - looks a lot like Hot Rod from the "Transformers" cartoon

Gina's Video Game - ...is "Street Fighter II" on the Super Nintendo

Lazy-Boy - a reclining chair that is VERY relaxing

King Kong - a 50-foot gorilla, star of his own movie back in the 1920s, enemy of Godzilla
