Reviews of "The Interpreter" by The Four Bastards

Hot Chick: Nicole Kidman

Hot Chick Factor: 10

Synopsis -- A simultaneous translator working at the U.N. somehow conveniently overhears what could be an assassination plot against a visiting scumbag. Is she lying? What are her motives? What about the motives of the Secret Service asshole assigned to the case? We find out (slowly), and wackiness and political intrigue ensue.

Short declaratory phrase in an attempt to get quoted in TV trailer, ad, or cover box --

"This movie fills me with an unreasonable love for jabbering foreigners and their wacky frippery!"

Nate's review:

So isn't it convenient that the one person in the building that could have possibly caught wind of this alleged assassination plot just happened to be in the place where she could hear this stuff? My biggest problem with the incident that sets the entire plot in motion was that I couldn't see why the bad guys were talking in the specific place where they were talking unless they wanted to play "U.N. Pretend Delegation" and revisit their Model U.N. days from high school, but I'll leave that alone lest I give away any spoilers. I really thought this movie could have been a lot better than it was. Sean Penn may be the biggest wet blanket and the biggest Jude Law fan in the world, but he typically turns in good performances, as does Nicole Kidman. Also, I don't know if you know this, but Kidman is hot! Suffice to say, the acting is fine, and I thought (in the beginning, at least) the filmmaking was pretty good too, building suspense without using cheap freak-out devices and loud non-diagetic music, primarily through editing. The cinematography was good too, giving New York a "raw," grey feeling but still making Nic look great. But the film as a whole gets bogged down by the convuluted and overly convenient, hard-to-swallow plotlines, and the conflicting backgrounds and motivations of the two main characters. The film also seems to run a little long, but I don't know what you could really cut out. At any rate, I'd skip this one, unless you just love Penn and/or Kidman, because their performances will not disappoint, or you're into watching her ride around on a Vespa (hey, who isn't?).

Rating: 6.5 out of 10 African tribeswomen that I wouldn't date
