WEEK 3

Earth's last, best hope...?

The new base becomes the centre of attention as research continues, hopefully soon to be moved to this new facility, where Advanced labs are already being constructed. The new base offers a lay-out that, whilst somewhat short on space, gives ideal opportunities for effective base defence. Placing a repair bay close to the access lift, and cordoning both off with security stations, will seriously restrict any attackers. A direct UFO attack on the building above the base would spell disaster, however - "Gates Of Destiny" is built under a multi-storey slum...

The threat to Marsec appears to be over for the present, with only Psyke in danger of going over to the other side. Regular targets include Megapol factories and slums. Marsec are UNFRIENDLY, however, but $35000 to restore them to a NEUTRAL standing is too high a price to pay at present. Later, unfortunate incidents at Marsec facilities cause them to become HOSTILE (twice)...

...and costly pay-offs become a necessity. We are simply not yet ready to become self-sufficient in weapons or aircraft.

Marsec, Megapol and slum areas are the most common targets for alien activity. Alien troop deployment sometimes goes in our favour, allowing X-Com to hit the invading forces hard early in the mission, but more often the opposite proves true. A theory is formulated concerning Motion Sensors - are the aliens more aggressive and accurate if these devices are used?

An exception for the normal routine comes as an alien Assault Ship is shot down, and recovered without serious casualties. Losses would have been acceptable, as this ship, and the knowledge it will yield, will prove vital in the future.

More casualties are sustained in tactical missions, and the medical bays are sorely tested with the influx of wounded. It becomes difficult to respond to the alien threat without fielding wounded men.

The aliens themselves present a possible solution, as we recover and start to research vital alien equipment. In the meantime, Stun Gas Grenades serve X-Com well, frequently neutralising dangerous groups of well-armed Anthropods and Skeletoids.

At the start of the week, the aliens are frequently employing Devastator Cannons, but often fall back on Disrupter Guns or Brainsucker Launchers. Personal Shields soon become regular equipment, along with Vortex Mines towards the end of the week. Our answer to this escalation is soon to appear, as the Advanced Biochemistry Lab at Gates Of Destiny goes on-line, and research into Biological Warfare begins...

A Nice Group Shot

Greatest Victory : Surviving long enough to start bio-warfare research, preventing any major infiltrations, recovering an Assault Ship.

Score At End Of Week : 12257
