The Jerk (1979)

Martin's first starring role had him in the indomitable title role. He experiences poverty in his upbringing, fame and riches as the inventor of a patented spectacle design, a spectacular public downfall, true love with Bernadette Peters and all the time remaining blissfully aware of all that goes on around him.

Bunn - Oh, wait a moment, um....no, hang on....shit...I haven't seen it.

Dave - Sheer brilliance. Right from the beginning when Martin discovers that his (black) parents adopted him ("You mean I'm gonna stay this colour?") it never once becomes unfunny. Sure, it looses the plot toward the end but that's hardly something to quibble about, this is Martin at his juvenile best.
