Deinonychus was one of the largest dromaeosaurids. Like the others it had a short, clawed, first ("big")toe turned back. The second toe bore a sickle-shaped claw 5 inches long. Its weight rested on the long third and fourth toes of each foot. The tail was stiffened by up to 40 bony rods around each vertebra.

Time: Early Cretaceous.
Place: North America (Western USA).
