The Rosie O'Donnell Interview

Rosie: Our next guest plays Lt. Commander Harmon Rabb, Jr. on the TV series "JAG". Take a look.

Episode Clip from "Heroes":

Rabb: "Capt. Morris is about to throw our case out of court. Mac knows it."

Bud: "Well, maybe it was a friendly fire accident, sir."

Rabb: "Jumping a sinking ship, Bud?"

Bud: "No sir. I'll go down with you."

Rabb: "Well, hopefully you won't have to. But if Mac wins one more point, Connors walks and we'll never know the truth."

Rosie: Please welcome David James Elliott. How are you?

DJE: Good.

Rosie: Nice to meet you.

DJE: Nice to be here. Thanks for having me.

Rosie: Now, did you know your publicist kept sending me 8x10's of you?

DJE: I see that. I heard.

Rosie: Look at all of these different shots autographed. Is that your autograph?

DJE: No.

Rosie: It's not, is it?

DJE: It's not.

Rosie: It's your publicist's.

DJE: I'd be lying if I said it was.

Rosie: This is sort of my favorite one here. This is that. (Picture of DJE in uniform sitting in a helicopter.)

DJE: It's very…

Rosie: That's a cute thing there. Yeah. Are you having fun on the show?

DJE: So far, yeah.

Rosie: It's very action filled. Do you do your own stunts?

DJE: I do a lot of stunts. I injure myself constantly.

Rosie: Really?

DJE: I threw my back out. I sprained my sacroiliac yesterday. So, I almost came out like Groucho. If it weren't for my…

Rosie: How'd you sprain it?

DJE: I had to carry a 200-lb. man. We're doing this recon-marine thing. That's why I'm sporting this new hairstyle. And we're going through this urban warfare training. And he gets injured and I have to carry him out of this war-torn village on my back up a hill.

Rosie: And they made you do it?

DJE: Yes.

Rosie: See that's not good.

DJE: That's not good.

Rosie: You've got to get a stunt man.

DJE: I have a stunt man. Diamond Farnsworth is my stunt man.

Rosie: Is he good?

DJE: He's great. His father is Richard Farnsworth who was a stunt man before he became an actor.

Rosie: Runs in the family.

DJE: Yes, but he's not doing as many stunts as maybe I'd…he will be soon.

Rosie: Yeah. Have your agent call and say stop sending the pictures to Rosie. Get on that stunt man deal. You know what I mean?

DJE: Yes.

Rosie: Now you used to theater as well.

DJE: Did a lot of theater. Yeah. Transfer theater. And as a matter of fact, I had a stunt that went wrong when I was starting out in Stratford. We were doing "Richard II" and Brian Betford was playing Richard II and he's such a great actor. Every night, I would come on at the end of the play as one of the murderers to murder Richard and you never knew what you were going to get when you came out because every night was different. This night, I came running out. We were about 6 months into the run of the show and he was crazed. I mean…normally, what I do is I thrust a spear just to the side of him and he would parry it with a knife and at the last minute he'd turn the blade and you know, fake a stab to the stomach and throw me backwards.

Rosie: Right.

DJE: Well, this night he jumped in front of the spear and knocked it out of the way, didn't turn the blade, stabbed me, threw me back. I hit my head on the step and I saw this flash of light and I was out for a minute. All I remember is the lights going down and thinking I have to get off-stage and you would follow this glow tape off. I managed to make it to the top of the stairs in the dark and I stepped off the edge. I did a flip and landed on a guy in the front row.

Rosie: Oh my gosh. Lawsuit.

DJE: I think there was a lawsuit. I mean, I never saw it but that's what I heard. I broke his leg.

Rosie: Ooooh, really? No kidding.

DJE: Yeah.

Rosie: You have a daughter. One daughter?

DJE: Yeah.

Rosie: How do you like being a dad?

DJE: Oh it's great. It's the best thing really. In the beginning she had colic. I don't know what your experience was like with your child…it was fine in the beginning?

Rosie: He was up every hour. But he really didn't have colic, he just wasn't into sleeping.

DJE: Oh man. From midnight until 4 in the morning, she would scream like a banshee. It was outrageous.

Rosie: Now she's four.

DJE: Yeah. Coming up soon.

Rosie: Now she's the light of your life I bet.

DJE: Oh yeah. I just give. She's into credit cards and money.

Rosie: No kidding, at four?

DJE: At four.

Rosie: Really?

DJE: She seems to have grasped that one.

Rosie: Here, give her this Elmo. Try to get her onto that. Alright? "JAG" is on Fridays, 9:00 on CBS. David James Elliott, thank you for being here.

DJE: Thanks for having me.

Rosie: We'll be right back after this. Don't go anywhere.
