BAD LIEUTENANT Review On "Violent Maniac's Cage"

Well whattya know, Abel Ferrera who started out with low buget cheese like The Driller Killer has moved up to big budget drama cheese. This film looked like a Reservoir Dogs type violent crime drama but it turned out to be the study of an off the tracks cop. Even the story which was said to have been about an investigation into the rape of a nun was given the backseat to the life of Keitel's character. I couldn't really see the need for an NC-17 rating as the violence (which wasn't much) was kept to an all time minimum.

What there is in this are many shots of Keitel getting high by snorting cocaine, smoking crack and shooting up heroin. He steals confiscated drugs, gambles like a bastard and even in one memorable instance pulls over a couple of young girls. He tells one to show him her ass while he tells the other to pretend she's sucking on a dick. Keitel beats off while watching, after losing a large sum of money on a bet he swears his head off while driving and turning on his police car siren. The ending is quite bizarre to say the least. Not a bad film but the full frontal nude scene of Keitel I could have done without (shades of the film Piano maybe?)

Other mentionable scenes would be Keitel talking to someone who he thinks is Jesus and kissing their feet. Keitel eventually finds the two who raped the nun, smokes crack with them, gives them a box full of money and sends them off on a bus. Something else worth mentioning in this film is that Keitel always makes a weird agonizing whining noise when things are not going well for him. It actually sounds like he's severly constipated and in bad need of some serious laxitives. Lots of nudity in this including a full frontal nude scene of the raped nun who doesn't look bad. All of this until the very inevitable final scene.
