BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, THE

(1969, Italy)

DIRECTED BY: Dario Argento.

One of Argento's first pictures and what a film it is. Argento's style is very prevalent even in this earlier work. Film has an American man in Italy who witnesses an attempted murder. He is then forced by the Italian police to remain there. A number of attempts on his life are made. He then gets deeper and deeper into the mystery. Like always Argento leads to an interesting conclusion but this time the ending is not shoved down your throat like in Suspiria or Tenebrae.

The idea is one similar to what he did later in Trauma but not as effective of course. Some really brilliant moments that will make you smile. The film has a lot of quality for an earlier movie of this type but I wouldn't call it a slasher or gore film as the blood shed is minimal and what is here is the most of you would see on a made for TV murder mystery. It s just a well made tasteful mystery (except for the guy who eats cats). Another winner.
