EVIL DEAD TRAP I

ALSO KNOWN AS: Hireki I.

(1991, Japan)

If you think Japanese Splatter has to be nihilistic and wierd like TETSOU or just plain sick like the GUINEA PIG series than you should really watch EVIL DEAD TRAP I and II - two gems just waiting to be uncovered. Part one starts which the pretty hostess of a LateNight Show getting a video tape which first shows someone driving to a run down factory then killing a young woman in an excessively brutal way (a very realistic eyestabbing inclusive). The hostess naturally is shocked but then gets the (bad) idea that there might be a story to get from this incident, instead of reporting it to the police. She packs her all-girl team along with a friend to go and investigate. Naturally the mysterious killer has just waited for that to happen and offs the cast one by one in very gory and imaginative ways. This movie has it all - imaginative camera angles, great (and I really mean it) special FX (just wait until you see the scene where one unlucky actress gets impaled by 3 large iron rods), many suspenseful scenes, good acting and similar production values. The plot itself is basically a slasher movie with a supernatural twist at the end - the killer is being possesed by his demonic, deformed AND unborn twin-brother - but it´s the way the movie is presented which places it miles before the usual run-off-the-mill slasher. When I got this movie I expected something like GUINEA PIG - much gore but nothing behind it - boy, was I wrong :)
