EVIL DEAD TRAP II

ALSO KNOWN AS: Hireki II.

(1993, Japan)

The second part in the series about the misdeeds of evil Hireki, demon and Ex-twin brother. The second part is a much more 'japanese' movie than the first part. Where the first part relied on dynamic camera work and flashy FX, the second part takes a much more nihilistic and cold approach to its topic. The film deals with three people being possessed by Hireki and woven into a tight and wierd relationship. One of them, a shy, overweight projectionist at a cinema (our heroine), leads a rather miserable life without any close friends. One day a girl friend of her, a sexually very obsessive news reporter (played by the actress who played the heroine in the first part), arranges a date with one of her former lovers for her. Naturally our heroine rejects the offer and later kills one poor prostitute out of frustration (by ripping out her ovaries). The next day sees the news reporter doing a special on this crime and getting sexually aroused by the mangled corpse - the film gets more wierd from this point with the man falling in love with the projectionist, the news woman wanting him back and Hirekis influence on all three of them getting stronger and stronger. Why you ask? - Hell, who knows - but the film is presented in a very engrossing manner and holds you spellbound until its ending. Althought this film doesn´t rely on eye candy as much as the first one, it still contains some great scenes. One of them is a battle between the news reporter and our heroine (Carving knife vs. Scissors) in a large hall full of white blankets - just to make the buckets of blood spilled more visible (a very Argento´esque scene). As said before, the film is presented in a rather slow manner with either very shocking and/or beautifully filmed scenes of violence - definately not for everyone, but anyone who enjoys a gore-packed movie with a complex story (aka the Cronenberg-crowd) should give it a try.
