FLY, THE

(1986, Canada)

DIRECTED BY: David Cronenberg.

I know this is an update of the 1958 film which I haven't and probably never will see. This version by Cronenberg is one of his earlier works before he became less horror oriented and if you've watched any of his other earlier efforts excluding The Dead Zone then you know there is going to be some gruesome stuff in it.

Surprisingly throughout most of the film Cronenberg focusses on the love of scientist Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis until unleashing the carnage at the end. Movie has Goldblum performing an experiment on himself with a creation that can transport matter from one place to another unharmed if done in the proper order.

The only problem is when Goldblum tests it on himself and a fly gets in one of the chambers with him. This in turn changes Goldblum into a giant lifelike fly. The transformation is grotesque but incredibly well done to say the least. The film is not loaded down with effects until more towards the end and then they let loose quite nicely.

The most gruesome scenes have to be Goldblum vomiting acid on a guys hand and leg disintegrating them. By now Cronenberg fans know he likes his violence potent. A film to look into. Chris Wala's won an Oscar for his effects work in this. He went on to direct the sequel.
