HATE

ALSO KNOWN AS: La Haine.

(1995, France)

DIRECTED BY: Mathieu Kassovitz.

Before watching this I was expecting something brutal and violent along the lines of Romper Stomper or Man Bites Dog but unfortunately I was mistakened. This urban tale takes place in the projects of Paris (this is subtitled). It involves three young men who are all different (one's an Arab, one's a Jew and the other is black). There's a really strong message of hate towards the police in this although they are not all portrayed as inhuman monsters except for the same ones who keep appearing and causing trouble for the three boys.

In most cases this film makes you despise the pigs (oops I mean cops, slip of the tongue) for they're less than lawful actions. In a couple of cases we can level with the cops but eventually the cons outweigh the pros in this. I didn't like this film much though, it was really slow and throughout its entirely we seen how the three young men spend their time. They bicker a lot with each other, one gets a cops gun and blabbers on about killing one but he never does. He's pissed because a buddy of his was beaten into a coma by some policemen. There is a strong message thoughout besides hate for cops but the film is just not relayed with the necessary intensity needed. The ending is superb and anything less than happy.
